One of the biggest moments at the IHSA Boys State Meet in May was when Freeport’s Deion McShane crossed the finish line in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles under 37 seconds.

McShane entered the race after earlier in the meet finishing second to Peru St. Bede’s Brett Dannis in the 110-Meter High Hurdles. Dannis pushed McShane in the longer hurdle race to the win. McShane’s time of 36.53 broke the IHSA state meet record as well as being the fastest time ever in the event for an Illinois prep athlete. Freeport was the co-state champion this spring mainly because McShane. The junior scored 31 of the 37 points including a fifth-place finish in the Long Jump, second in the 200 Meter Dash, as well as his finishes in the hurdles.

Rodrick McMiller of Perspectives Charter in Chicago was one of the big surprises in the 2A meet as he won both the 100 and 200 Meter Dash along with finishing third in the Long Jump. He ran 10.42 in June at the Senior Spotlight Meet giving him the third fastest time at 100 Meters in the state.

McShane’s overall season gives him the edge ahead of McMiller along with the hurdles record.

Congratulations to Deion McShane of Freeport High School as the 2017 ILXCTF.com 2A Boys Sprints/Hurdles Athlete of the Year.
