2017 IHSA 2A Girls Track & Field Sectional Highlights

Here are highlights from the IHSA 2A Sectional Meets that took place from May 10 to May 12.

 

May 12 – Chicago De La Salle

Westinghouse Prep used three relays wins and a double win by Jade Mayes to win the sectional title with 108 points. De La Salle Institute scored 83 points to jus finish ahead of the Latin School (80 points). Mayes won both hurdle events running 15.27 to win the 100 Hurdles as well as running 45.65 to win the 300 Hurdles ahead of teammate Jamika Leverston.

Westinghouse also won the 400 Meter Relay (49.45), the 800 Meter Relay (1:46.06), and the 1600 Meter Relay (4:14.18). King’s Farrah Phelps won both the 100 Meter Dash (12.73) and the 200 Meter Dash (25.67).

 

May 11 – Chicago University @ Concordia University

Shaheeda Dade of Lindblom Academy accomplished a tough double winning both the 800 Meter Run (2:23.96) and the 400 Meter Dash (1:01.47). Chicago University’s Chavon Hussey also took home sectional wins in the Long Jump 16-5) and the High Jump (4-10)

Evergreen Park won the sectional title (158 points) behind wins in the 100 Hurdles (16.33) and 300 Hurdles (48.34) by Lily Sader. They also picked up a win by freshman Tiera Robinson-Jones in the 200 Meter Dash (25.30).

 

May 11 – Thornridge

Imani Carothers of Brooks College Prep jumped a personal best 19-9 to win the Long Jump in which six athletes advanced to Charleston. She also won the 100 Meter Hurdles (14.35) but was surprised in the Triple Jump as Carothers finished second (38-5) behind the 38-9.5 personal best by Jayla Campbell of Rich Central. Campbell also won the 400 Meter Dash (57.47).

Eight athletes advanced to the state meet in the 100 Meter Dash in which the first three finishers were within four hundredths of a second of each other. Morgan Park’s Olivia Strong got the win (12.33) ahead of Rich South’s Brittany Hollie (12.35) and Marian Catholic’s Jada Hoffman (12.37). Eight athletes also qualified in the 200 Meter Dash as Morgan Park’s Carinne Parker (25.09) and Strong (25.2) took the top two spots.

Marian Catholic won the team title with 87 points behind the double win by Kelly Mindak in the 1600 Meter Run (5:25.34) and the 800 Meter Run (2:19.62) just ahead of Illiana Christian’s Gillian Fiene (2:19.97).

 

May 11 – Dunlap

Dunlap were rude hosts at their own sectional as they scored 205 points to win the sectional title qualifying all four relays along with 17 individual athletes. They will be one of the teams to watch next weekend in Charleston. All their relay times are among the top five best in Class 2A. The Eagles started with a season’s best 9:36.82 to win the 3200 Meter Relay four seconds ahead of Washington (9:40.32). Their 48.00 time in the 400 Meter Relay was two seconds ahead of Peoria. There was a five second gap between the Eagles (1:42.63) and Richwoods (1:47.60) in the 800 Meter Relay. Their sweep was complete after they ran 4:01.52 to win the 1600 Meter Relay.

Dunlap had three individual double winners in this sectional. Kiara Pauli (12.31) and Alex Schaub (12.66) took the top two spots in the 100 Meter Dash. Pauli came back to win the 200 Meter Dash (25.47) by more than a second ahead of Macomb’s Blessed Smith. Aanise Sajna won the Long Jump (17-8) and the Triple Jump (37-0.5).

Franny Verville was the third double winner as she ran 11:13.48 to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of teammate Ayah Aldadah (11:17.08). Verville came back to run 5:10.32 to win the 1600 Meter Run as eight athletes made the qualifying time to advance to the state meet.

 

May 12 – Genoa Kingston

Last year’s 2A co-state champion Kaneland look to be another team to watch next weekend in Charleston as they won the sectional title with 97 points. Rockford Boylan (88 points) and Sterling (87 points) finished second and third. The Lady Knights advanced nine (6 individuals/3 relays to the state meet.

Grace McLaughlin of Boylan Catholic had one of the best 2A sectional performances this weekend with a pair of wins in the distance events. The junior ran the fastest 2A time in the state and third fastest overall in the state as she ran 10:31.58 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 43 seconds. McLaughlin also won the 1600 Meter Run (5:00.69) five seconds ahead of teammate Delaney Appino (5:05.46).

Geneseo’s Erika Furbeck also had a great meet winning three individual events. She jumped 18-9 to win the Long Jump. She won the sprints by running 12.23 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 25.49 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Tayla Schwarz of Dixon also picked up two wins with a 39-9 throw to win the Shot Put and a 124-5 effort to win the Discus.

 

May 11 – Glenbard South

Rosary’s second place finish behind Aurora Central Catholic in the 1600 Meter Relay gave them the points needed to win the sectional team title (92 points) by just one point ahead of Montini Catholic (91 points). Rosary qualified all their relays along with four individual athletes to next week’s state meet.

Wheaton Academy’s Karyn Best won both the 300 Hurdles (43.98) with the state’s second fastest time and the 200 Meter Dash (26.28). Best finished second in the 100 Hurdles behind Ridgewood’s Vicky Igancik (14.70).

Abby Fioresi of Aurora Central Catholic could be one of the 800 Meter Run next week as she ran 2:13.84 to win in this sectional. Fioresi also won the 1600 Meter Run (5:15.82) less than a second ahead of Rosary’s Claire Hengesbaugh (5:16.54).

 

May 11 – Mattoon

Monticello had the edge over Urbana in this sectional as they scored 108 points to win the team championship. Urbana was only six points back (102 points). Decatur Eisenhower’s Tina and Katina Martin were at their best as the two swept the three individual sprint titles. Katina ran 11.91 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Katina picked up the other two events with a 57.51 time to win the 400 Meter Dash. She came back to run 24.20 to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of her sister (24.36). The two Martin sisters helped Decatur Eisenhower win the 400 Meter Relay (48.68) ahead of Urbana (49.41).

Monticello was led by a two-event win by Aliyah Welter. The junior, who is one of the best athletes in the state in the Pole Vault, cleared 12-0 to win that event. She had a close finish in the 100 Hurdles but won (15.54) by just three hundredths of a second ahead of teammate Emelia Ness (15.57). Ness had the upper-hand in the 300 Hurdles as she won (46.47) ahead of Welter’s 46.93).

Urbana’s Olivia Rosenstein won both the 800 Meter Run (2:21.81) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:14.34) where she was more than a second ahead of Tolono Unity’s Jordan Harmon (5:15.82). Earlier in the meet, Harmon won the 3200 Meter Run (11:07.87).

 

May 12 – Mendota

LaSalle-Peru won the sectional team title behind the double win by Rachel Hickey. The Lady Cavaliers scored 103 points to outdistance Sandwich (78 points) and Providence Catholic (69 points). LaSalle-Peru advanced ten (7 individuals/3 relays) to Charleston.

Hickey, the 2A defending champion in the 800 Meter Run, won that event (2:21.40) as well as the 1600 Meter Run with a personal best 5:19.33. Sandwich’s Kayla Schiera finished second in both of those events advancing to the state meet. Hickey also ran the anchor leg in LaSalle-Peru’s winning 1600 Meter Relay (4:06.83). Her teammate Shay Scheri qualified for state in three events including a personal best 18-7.5 jump to win the Long Jump.

 

May 11 – Richmond- Burton

Vernon Hills qualified six individuals and all four of their relays in winning the sectional team titles with 139.33 points. Jordyn Bunning led the Cougars with wins in the 100 Meter Hurdles (15.69) and the 300 Meter Hurdles (47.16). Lauren Katz also won for Vernon Hills in the 1600 Meter Run (5:18.26) less than two seconds ahead of Woodstock’s Kate Jacobs (5:20.13).

Elizabeth Drab of St. Viator picked up three wins in the sprints. The 2A defending champion in the 400 Meter Dash, won that event (56.54) as well as the 100 Meter Dash (12.35) and the 200 Meter Dash (25.42).

 

May 11 – Salem

A double win in the sprints by Tredaja Harris helped Mt. Vernon win the sectional team title ahead of Mascoutah (86 points) and Freeburg (79 points). Harris ran 12.67 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 26.50 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Mt. Vernon’s A’veun Moore threw 135-0 to win the Discus. She finished second in the Shot Put (45-5.5) behind Centralia’s Latavia Maines (46-9.25) and her sister Nikita (41-2).

 

May 10 – Springfield Southeast

Cahokia is in position to go after their fourth straight 2A championship after winning this sectional with 124 points. The Lady Comanches qualified 12 overall (9 individuals/3 relays) for next week’s meet in Charleston. They were led by Mariya Hudson and LaQwansia Stepney’s three individual wins.

Stepney won the Long Jump (18-8.5) with Hudson finishing a close second (18-5). Stepney went to the track to win both hurdle races. The sophomore ran 14.21 (IL #2) to win the 100 Hurdles ahead of teammate Jayla Crosby (14.74). Stepney concluded her triple running 44.39 to win the 300 Hurdles.

Hudson will conclude her high school career going after the state triple. It was one that she accomplished in 2015. Hudson started on the track winning the 100 Meter Dash and then came back to run a season’s best (54.90) to win the 400 Meter Dash. Hudson concluded her night by running the then state’s fastest time (24.07) to win the 200 Meter Dash

Springfield Southeast score 119 points only five behind Cahokia. They could also win a trophy in Charleston as they qualified 12 overall (10 individuals / 2 relays). The Spartans ran season’s best times in winning the 400 Meter Relay (48.10) and the 1600 Meter Relay (4:01.81). Serena Bolden qualified in three individual events including winning the Triple Jump (36-6.5).

Madeline Campbell of Rochester won two individual events. The senior ran 11:35.13 to win the 3200 Meter Run and then 5:28.77 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Anna Lowry of Taylorville finished second in both races to also qualify for state.
