Illinois High School Track & Field Weekend Recap – March 20, 2017

Did everybody survive the busiest weekend of Illinois High School track and field this year?

Teams looked for championships while some individuals went after some qualifying times for this weekend’s Illinois Top Times Championships at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center. Boy, were there some great performnces!

Meets that were covered included the DVC Girls Championships on Thursday, the WSC-Silver Boys Championships on Friday, and the Nagle-Saylor (MSL) Indoor Invitational on Saturday. The MSL Meet is in this recap. You can read recaps from the DVC-Girls and the WSC-Silver Boys that are linked.

Here are some of the highlights that covers some of the meets that took place on Friday through Saturday. Other results that took place in Illinois can be found here.

 

Saturday

Byron Indoor Classic

Jayvious Johnson of Machesney Park Harlem ran 7.97 to win the 55 Meter Hurdles and then came back to run 23.84 to win the 200 Meter Dash. James Lasak of Prairie Ridge ran 2:00.69 to win the 800 Meter Run two seconds ahead of Byron’s Chase Sarver. Justin Braskett of Machesney Park Harlem had a season’s best of 53-11.25 to win the Shot Put.

There were three double winners in the Girls meet Saturday morning. Aubrey Harrod of Hinckley-Big Rock tuned up for the Illinois Top Times Championships by winning the 800 Meter Run (2:24.22) by seven seconds ahead of Hampshire’s Marie Mayer. Harrod came back to run 1:03.76 to win the 400 Meter Dash by more than four seconds. Winnebago’s Betsy Currens ran 7.74 to win the 55 Meter Dash and then came back to win the 200 Meter Dash (27.72). Natasha Schaffer of Prairie Ridge won both horizontal jump events with a 15-7 leap to win the Long Jump and then a 34-11.5 leap to win the Triple Jump.

Charleston Boys Invitational

Second ranked 1A Shelbyville won the morning session of the meet scoring 76 points to finish ahead of Pleasant Plains (42 points) and Tuscola (41 points). Shelbyville won two of the relays contested starting with running 8:27.73 to win the 3200 Meter Relay 16 seconds ahead of Pleasant Plains. The Rams came back to win the 800 Meter Relay (1:37.25) finishing ahead of Newton and Tuscola who were both timed in 1:37.70. Pleasant Plains prevented a Shelbyville sweep in the relays winning the 1600 Meter Relay (3:38.01) more than a second ahead of Shelbyville. Kahlil Wassell of New Berlin ran 7.23 to win the 60 Meter Dash just seven hundredths of a second ahead of Joe Lopez of Tuscola. He closest field event was the Shot Put where only four inches separated the winner and runner-up. Andy Birch of Warsaw had a 53-0 put to win the event ahead of Shelbyville’s Dillon Birch’s 52-8 effort.

The 1600 Meter Run proved to be a great race as Logan Hall of Arthur-Lovington ran 4:23.56 for the win ahead of St. Joseph-Ogden’s Justin Phillips (4:27.82).

Six time 2A state champion Cahokia scored 71 points to win the AA/AAA title ahead of Springfield (59 points) and Marion (52 points). Cahokia swept all three relays starting with an 8:16.12 win in the 3200 Meter Relay ahead of Mattoon (8:18.20) and Marion (8:18.34). It was close in the 800 Meter Relay as the Comanches ran 1:33.95 to just edge Collinsville (1:34.07). Cahokia’s staple event is the 1600 Meter Relay. They were in control of that race (3:30.52) to win by six seconds ahead of Springfield Southeast (3:36.10) and Normal West (3:36.44).

Cahokia’s Chris Stanley ran 1:59.26 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Normal West’s Tyler Dunn (2:01.19). Brandon Roberson also gave Cahokia a win in the 400 Meter Dash as he ran 51.47 to win with Dearis Herron of Springfield Lanphier finishing second (52.22). Herron jumped 21-11 to win the Long Jump. Ronald Reed of Decatur MacArthur ran 7.00 to win the 60 Meter Dash ahead of Springfield’s Wendel Burnes (7.08) and Collinsville’s Trevore Sanders and Jermarion Stewart (7.09). Sanders came back to run 22.59 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

Galesburg Last Chance Invitational @ Monmouth College

Top ranked Dunlap dominated the Girls side of the meet with some great performances. Franny Verville ran 11:17.00 to win the 3200 Meter Run nine seconds ahead of teammate Ayah Aldadah (11:26.83). Aldadah came back to run 5:21.80 to win the 1600 Meter Run with teammate Miranda Kruiswyk close behind (5:21.89). Derria Edwards of Peoria Central ran the fastest state time in the 60 Meter Dash last Monday in her conference meet. She got the win in the 60 Meter Dash in this meet (7.67) ahead of Dunlap’s Kiara Pauli (7.85). Maggie Schutte of Quincy got a double win jumping 34-9.75 to win the triple Jump and then ran 9.33 to win the 60 Meter Hurdles.

Dunlap closed the Boys meet with style running 3:32.40 to win the 1600 Meter Relay. Jackson Harkness of Elmwood-Brimfield had an indoor personal best in the Shot Put with a 52-0 put to win the event.

Gene Armer Invitational @ University of Illinois

Jelena Rowe of Bloom is hot right now in the High Jump. The nation’s top ranked athlete in that event cleared a nation’s leading 6-0 for the second week in a row to win the event ahead of Urbana freshman Diamonasia Taylor who cleared 5-6. Hannah Morris of Bloom is recovered from an injury that she suffered at the end of February. Morris jumped 18-9.75 to win the Long Jump more than two inches ahead of Springfield Southeast’s Serena Bolden’s 18-7.25 personal best. Bloom swept the horizontal jumps as Kyja Griggs jumped 35-5 to win the Triple Jump.

Anna Sophia Keller of St. Anthony could be doubling at this weekend’s Illinois Top Times Championships. She focused on the 1600 Meter Run at this meet and won (4:54.88, IL #2) to win by 17 seconds ahead of Evanston’s Enyaeva Michelin. Lyn’Nikka Vance of Crete-Monee won the 60 Meter Dash running 7.67 (IL #4) one hundredth of a second ahead of Decatur Eisenhower’s Tina Martin with Ameia Wilson of Danville finishing third (7.76). Defending 1A 100/200 champion Courtney Sockwell of Rockford Lutheran ran 7.80 to finish fourth. Wilson came back to run 25.50 (IL #8) to win the 200 Meter Dash.

Tauja Foreman of Evanston Township ran 8.98 (IL #3) to win the 60 Meter Hurdles ahead of Springfield Southeast’s Dontavia Howard (9.12, IL #4). Evanston Township ran 1:46.26 (IL #10) to win the 800 Meter Relay ahead of Springfield Southeast (1:46.60) and Granite City (1:46.81). Kristin Slaughter of St. Anthony cleared an indoor season’s best of 12-0 (IL #4) to win the Pole Vault.

Wyatt McIntyre of Athens was a double winner in the distance races with his 1600 win a close one. He started by running 9:40.03 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 22 seconds almost lapping the entire field. Two seconds separated the top three finishers in the 1600 Meter Run. McIntyre ran 4:26.88 to win by a tenth of second ahead of Granite City’s Andrew O’Keefe (4:26.98). Jake Schwartz of Waterloo finished third (4:28.18). Phillip Hall of Danville went under two minutes in the 800 Meter Run for the first time this season with a 1:59.33 for the win.

Quemarii Williams of Danville won the 400 Meter Dash (51.34) just eight hundredths of a second ahead of Bloom Township’s Amitai Wheat with Noah Hays of Waterloo finishing third (51.47). Wheat was part of Bloom Township’s winning 1600 Meter Relay (3:28.80, IL #8) that finished almost six seconds ahead of Lane Tech.

Stephon King of Manual Academy ran 8.38 (IL #7) to win the 60 Meter Hurdles just ahead of Lane Tech’s Michael Banks (8.39, IL #8). Juwan Denton of Morgan Park was a double winner running 22.90 to win the 200 Meter Dash and jumping 21-6.75 to win the Long Jump. Frank Massey of Bloom Township achieved a personal best jumping 45-2.5 to win the Triple Jump.

Huntley Boys Last Chance Meet Invitational

Huntley’s fast indoor track again produced some fast times in this meet. Brian Griffith of Lake Zurich sizzled a state leading 1:55.38 to win the 800 Meter Run finishing two seconds ahead of his brother Kyle who ran 1:57.43 (IL #2). Dubem Anikamadu of Huntley ran 7.00 (IL #6) to win the 60 Meter Dash. Crete-Monee ran 1:31.98 (IL #7) to win the 800 Meter Relay ahead of host Huntley (1:32.25, IL #10). Colton Weber of St. Charles East cleared a personal best 15-1 (IL #3) to win the Pole Vault.

Lake Michigan Boys Invitational @ Carthage College

The 1600 Meter Run proved to be the main event in this meet with Illinois and Wisconsin schools involved. Jack Aho of Grayslake Central ran a state best 4:13.39 to win the event ahead of Libertyville’s Alex Tam (4:19.24, IL #3) and Jack Becker of Crystal Lake South (4:23.66). Cameron Ruiz of Lakes Community won two events with a 51.33 to win the 400 Meter Dash. He came back to jump 23-0 (IL #2) to win the Long Jump. Landon Keefover of Antioch improved his personal best down to 7.65 (IL #2) to win the 55 Meter Hurdles. Brad Garron of Evanston Township ran 22.28 to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of Bobby Nuzzo of Mundelein (22.73). Nuzzo earlier ran 6.55 to win the 55 Meter Dash.

Mid Suburban League @ North Central College

It seemed like Declan Rustay of Hoffman Estates willed his team to the league championship Saturday afternoon at North Central College’s Res Rec Center. The junior was a part of four scoring events for the Hawks including a closing second place finish in the 1600 Meter Relay. Hoffman Estates won the Boys Meet with 104 points ahead of Prospect (99 points) and Fremd (76 points).

Rustay had a busy day including being involved in the most exciting race of the day. Jason Shannon of Wheeling out-leaned Rustay for the 55 Meter Dash win running 6.43 (IL #2). Rustay was just one hundredth of a second back (6.44, IL #4). He came back to run 22.65 to win the 200 Meter Dash just five hundredths of a second ahead of John Elischer of Palatine. Rustay was a part of Hoffman Estates winning 800 Meter Relay as he ran a 22.6 opening split as his team ran 1:31.57 to win the event. He finished his day anchoring the Hawks to second in the 1600 Relay (3:33.81) behind winning Prospect (3:30.51).

Victor Olaitan of Schaumburg ran the fastest time (7.64) in the state to win the 55 Meter Hurdles. The High Jump was “high-powered” as Wheeling’s Lawrence Knish cleared a personal best 6-7 (IL #3) to win the event ahead of Prospect sophomore Michael Shafis who cleared 6-5. The Shot Put had some of the state’s elite in the event with four athletes that went past 55 feet. Ethan Hanson of Fremd had a 58-6 mark to win the event ahead of Barrington’s John Steffan (57-7, IL #5).

Fremd won the 3200 Meter Relay (8:02.46, IL #4)) winning by eight seconds ahead of Hoffman Estates. The key in that race was the 1:56 third leg by Danny Peterson that broke the race wide open. Peterson made a move on Hoffman Estates Jack Worman with a little more than three laps to go in the 1600 Meter Run on his way to the win (4:21.99) ahead of Worman (4:23.42). Alex Makrounis of Hoffman Estates was a last-minute entry in the 3200 Meter Run but his late race surge gave him the win (9:28.89) more than five seconds ahead of Barrington’s Nick Laning. Buffalo Grove’s Arturo Bautista surprised some in the 800 Meter Run with the win (1:58.29, IL #6) ahead of John Gerardi of Rolling Meadows (1:58.55, IL #10).

Prospect won the Girls Meet (91 points) ahead of second-place Wheeling (77 points). Brooke Wilson led her team with a win in the 1600 Meter Run. The senior ran (4:59.62, IL #3) to win ahead of Hersey’s Sarah Harden (5:03.20, IL #6). Harden was part of Hersey’s winning 3200 Meter Relay that ran 9:30.29 (IL #3) for the win ahead of Schaumburg (9:33.99, IL #6) and Prospect anchored by Wilson (9:34.27, IL #7). Hoffman Estates sophomore Anna Miller led most of the 800 Meter Run. Schaumburg’s Madison Marasco passed Miller in the final 50-meters for the win in 2:16.72 (IL #5). Miller ran a personal best 2:16.93 (IL #7) to finish second.

Nya Carr of Buffalo Grove woke up the crowd by running 7.13 (IL #2) in the prelims of the 55 Meter Dash. Carr came back in the finals to run 7.19 to finish ahead of Prospect’s Annie Walsh (7.33). The tables turned in the 200 Meter Dash as Walsh won the event 25.69 (IL #10) finishing ahead of Carr (25.86). Walsh also was a part of Prospect’s winning 800 Meter Relay team that ran 1:47.35 to win just two hundredths of a second ahead of Wheeling (1:47.37). Carr also jumped 17-7.5 to win the Triple Jump. Kelsey McLaurin of Barrington jumped 37-2.5 (IL #10) to win the Triple Jump. McLaurin anchored Barrington’s 1600 Meter Relay that ran 4:05.58 (IL #6) for the win.

Nelson-Daniels Invitational @ Wisconsin-Whitewater (Large Schools-Saturday, Small Schools Friday)

In the Girls side of the meet, Illinois school athlete winners included Cora Uidl of Woodstock clearing 11-0 to win the Pole Vault and Anika Brennan of Jones College Prep running 2:26.27 to win the 800 Meter Run. Cary-Grove scored 59 points to win the Girls team title.

Myles Davis of Payton Prep ran 6.62 in the prelims of the Boys 55 Meter Dash. Davis came back to run 6.59 in the finals for the win. Lake Forest ran 1:34.51 to finish second in the 800 Meter Relay behind the 1:32.71 meet record from Kettle Moraine WI. Zach Dybul of Mukwonago WI set a meet record clearing 6-9 to win the High Jump. Woodstock’s Will Maidment cleared 6-6 (IL #6) to finish second.

The Friday meet had some of the Illinois 1A athletes turning in some good performances. In the Girls meet, Nygia Pollard of Harvest Christian Academy ran 5:41.11 to finish second in the 1600 Meter Run. Rockford Christian ran 10:36.44 to finish third in the 3200 Meter Relay.

Riley Wells of Rockford Christian achieved a new indoor personal best when he ran 1:59.17 to win the 800 Meter Run winning by six seconds. Wells was part of Rockford Christian’s 1600 Meter Relay that ran 3:32.83 o win by more than three seconds. Quinn Halversen, who also was in that relay, cleared 6-2 to finish second in the High Jump.

NIB-12 Indoor Conference @ Sterling

DeKalb swept the team titles. Their boys team scored 86 points for the win ahead of Yorkville (74 points). In the Girls meet, DeKalb scored 110 points finishing ahead of Yorkville (85.5 points) and Kaneland (66 points).

The 60 Meter Dash was close as Brimonet Buggs of DeKalb ran 7.76 for the win just two hundredths of a second edging Nicole Sreenan of Kaneland. Sreenan came back to run 25.43 (IL #6) to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of Buggs (25.96). DeKalb ran 1:45.38 (IL #3) to win the 800 Meter Relay. Rachel Hickey of LaSalle Peru had a convincing win in the 800 Meter Run with 2:17.64 (IL #9) finishing five seconds ahead of Yorkville’s Emily Eberhart. Erika Furbeck of Geneseo had the top Girls field event performance. She jumped 18-5.5 (IL #8) to win the Long Jump.

Reed Vanderheyden of Geneseo had a good day. He started by running 8.57 to win the 60-Meter High Hurdles and then coming back to run 52.87 to win the 400 Meter Dash just ahead of teammate Nick Swarzendruber (52.97). Geneseo won two of the three relays with 3:32.68 winning the 1600 Meter Relay and 8:21.00 to win the 3200 Meter Relay. DeKalb was the other relay winner with 1:33.25 just ahead of Yorkville (1:33.42).

Plainfield North Girls Invitational

Minooka won the team title with 83 points in this meet that is the unofficial conference meet involving all the Southwest Prairie Conference. Romeoville had a great day in the sprints. Their 800 Meter Relay quartet ran 1:45.12 (IL #2) to win the event by three seconds ahead of Plainfield South. Jahnetta Jones of Romeoville ran 7.37 to win the 55 Meter Dash with Oswego freshman Jennah Rogers just one hundredth of a second back (7.38). Jones ran 25.94 to win the 200 Meter Dash almost a second ahead of teammate Kaniyah Rush (26.84).

Emily Shelton of Minnoka was an easy winner in the 3200 Meter Run. Her time of 10:54.81 was 36 seconds ahead of teammate Vivian van Eck. Ashley Tutt and Sheldon finished 1-2 in the 1600 Meter Run (5:09.53 – 5:09.61). Isabelle Christiansen of Oswego ran 2:18.39 (IL #10) to win the 800 Meter Run two seconds ahead of Minooka’s Mackenzie Callahan (2:20.01).

Southwest Prairie Boys Conference @ Lewis University

Plainfield North scored 101 points to win the Boys conference title ahead of Oswego (80.5 points). Freshman Marcellus Moore led the way winning two individual events. Moore started with a 6.43 (IL #2 tie) to win the 55 Meter Dash. He followed with a 22.72 time to win the 200 Meter Dash. Moore led off Plainfield North’s 800 Meter Relay that ran 1:32.51 for the win ahead of Plainfield South (1:34.50) and Plainfield East (1:34.68).

Oswego ran 8:10.62 to win the 3200 Meter Relay with Minooka finishing second (8:10.95). Dylan Zangri of Oswego East ran 4:27.00 to win the 1600 Meter Run a little more than a second ahead of second place Bennett Peterson of Oswego (4:28.67). Joliet West surprised some by running 3:29.80 (IL #12) to win the 1600 Meter Relay ahead of Plainfield North (3:30.72) and Plainfield South (3:30.87).

Brennan Loughran of Minooka achieved a personal best by clearing 14-4 to win the Pole Vault. Sophomore Geremiah Lawson of Plainfield Central went 22-1 to win the Long Jump.

SWSC Girls Indoor Championships

Four individual wins by Jaimie Robinson was the main reason why Homewood-Flossmoor won this meet. The Lady Vikings scored 98 points to win the team title by just one point ahead of Lockport Township. Lincoln-Way East finished third (90 points) just ahead of Bolingbrook.

Robinson was her usual dominant self in the horizontal jumps winning both events. She jumped 18-8.5 to win the Long Jump and then won the Triple Jump (40-10) less than a foot behind her season’s best that she achieved the week before at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Robinson stepped to the track to run 7.69 (IL #5) to win the 60 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Jacqueline Bassey (7.97). Robinson finished her day by running 25.47 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Lockport’s Jaclyn Greci ran 25.73 to finish second.

Morgan Bollinger of Lockport Township helped her team with a double win in the distances. She lapped the field to run 11:25.48 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Bollinger came back to run 5:16.74 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Lincoln-Way East’s Jenna Couwenhoven finishing second (5:20.95). Jenna Diers of Lincoln-Way West dominated the field in the 800 Meter Run. Her time of 2:17.04 for the win was five seconds faster than second place Kayla Isom of Lockport Township.

Kayla Walters of Bolingbrook achieved a new personal best of 9.14 (IL #5) to win the 60-Meter Hurdles in a photo finish with Thornton’s Mya Robinson who had the same time. Bolingbrook had the edge in the 800 Meter Relay running 1:46.59 for the win edging Homewood-Flossmoor (1:46.98). Lockport Township ran 9:53.70 to win by a second ahead of Lincoln-Way East in the 3200 Meter Relay. Lincoln-Way East was in charge of the 1600 Relay running 4:05.22 for the win by six seconds ahead of Homewood-Flossmoor.

Lincoln-Way East’s Ololade Ayoola won the race of the meet in which four runners went under 60 seconds in the 400 Meter Dash and were within half a second of each other. Ayoola’s time of 59.44 was less than two tenths of a second ahead of Bolingbrook’s Kayla Perry (59.63) with Jenna Diers (59.95) and Kameesha Smith of Thornwood (59.97) placing third and fourth. Smith also cleared 5-4 to win the High Jump. Her teammate Oluwasheyi Taiwo got a personal best of 44-7 (IL #10) winning the Shot Put by almost three feet ahead of Lincoln-Way East’s Lauren LaDere (41-7.5)

Upstate Eight Girls Championships @ Batavia

Batavia won the conference title on their home track scoring 132 points. West Aurora, who did not have Dajour Miles in their lineup still recovering from a hamstring injury, finished second with 117.5 points.

Batavia’s Tori Ortiz was a big part of her team’s win in this meet. She started by running 7.34 to win the 55 Meter Dash just five hundredths of a second behind teammate Hannah Schlaman. Ortiz was third in the 400 Meter Dash. She was a part of Batavia’s winning 1600 Meter Relay (4:09.92) with West Aurora almost four seconds back in second place (4:13.77). West Aurora’s Tamia Rayford was busy running on her team’s 1600 Meter Relay. That was after finishing third in the 60 Meter Dash, running 59.06 to win the 400 Meter Dash, and running 26.12 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

WSC-Gold Girls Indoor Championships @ Proviso West

Downers Grove South won the conference title on the Varsity and Frosh/Soph levels for the 13th year in a row. The Lady Mustangs scored 173 points for their win with Morton Township (117 points) and Hinsdale South (108 points) finishing second and third. Addison Trail’s Lauren Kroll ran 7.29 (IL #8) to win the 55 Meter Dash. She came back to run 26.27 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

Downers Grove South swept the distance events. Katie Stapleton ran 11:33.38 to win the 3200 Meter Run, Erin Reidy ran 2:18.63 to win the 800 Meter Run, and Brenna Cohoon ran 5:18.98 to win the 1600 Meter Run. They also dominated the relays running 10:08.83 to win the 3200 Relay, 1:49.03 to win the 800 Meter Relay, and 4:12.85 to win the 1600 Meter Relay

Friday

CSL-North Boys Indoor Championships @ Glenbrook North

Deerfield scored 128 points to win the conference title with Glenbrook North scoring 107.33 points to finish second. Mark Mahoney led Deerfield with wins in the Long Jump (20-8) and the 200 Meter Dash (23.40).

CSL-South Girls Indoor Championships @ Glenbrook South

Host Evanston Township scored 153 points to win the indoor conference title ahead of Niles West (112 points) and New Trier (110 points). The Wildkits got wins in the jumps from Jonathan Wilburn in the Triple Jump (44-1) and Brian Daniels in the Long Jump (21-3). Daniels also ran 24.02 to win the 200 Meter Dash. The best performance of the meet came when Reese Jordan of Maine South ran 4:23.45 to win the 1600 Meter Run by more than nine seconds ahead of New Trier’s Cooper Woolford.

DuPage Valley Boys Indoor Championships @ North Central College

Neuqua Valley repeated as Boys conference champions scoring 138 points ahead of Wheaton-Warrenville South with 106 points and Lake Park with 73 points.

It helped Neuqua Valley that they received 1-2 finishes in two of the three distance races. Jackson Jett ran 9:23.58 (IL #8) to win the 3200 Meter Run with Zach Kinne second (9:28.18). Jake McEneaney won the 1600 Meter Run (4:19.86, IL #4) with Josh Mollway (4:20.39, IL #7) close behind. Wes York of Waubonsie Valley broke up the Neuqua distance dominance as he ran 1:58.63 (IL #13) to win the 800 Meter Run just ahead of Wheaton North’s Joey Simon (1:59.32).

The sprints and hurdles races in this meet were great. Alonzo Taylor-Jones of Metea Valley ran 6.46 (IL #5) to win the 55 Meter Dash ahead of Waubonsie Valley’s Tre’Von Petty and Haneef Spikener who finished second and third with the same time (6.59). Isaiah Robinson of Neuqua Valley ran 50.65 (IL #4) to win the 400 Meter Dash. His teammate JaQuere Williams ran 22.87 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Robinson was part of Neuqua Valley’s winning quartet that ran 3:28.33 in the 1600 Meter Relay. Naperville North ran 3:29.96 to finish second.

Glenbard North took the top two spots in the 55 Meter Hurdles. Jace James ran 7.67 (IL #3) to win the event just seven hundredths of a second ahead of Paris Miller (IL #5). Wheaton-Warrenville South ran 1:32.30 to win the 800 Meter Relay ahead of Neuqua Valley (1:32.52) and Metea Valley (1:32.86).

Tom Ansiel of Wheaton-Warrenville South cleared 15-1 to win the Pole Vault. Kristoffer Heinz of Naperville North cleared a season’s best of 6-5 to win the High Jump. Chago Basso of Lake Park won the Shot Put (57-3.25) winning by more than seven feet.

SWSC Boys Indoor Championships @ Olivet Nazarene University

Homewood-Flossmoor’s depth was the difference in winning the conference championship scoring in 13 of the 17 scored events. The Vikings had 102 points to finish ahead of Lincoln-Way East (72.5 points), Sandburg (72 points), and Bolingbrook (68.5 points).

Dylan Jacobs of Sandburg possibly had the best track performance of the meet. The junior ran a solo 9:11.67 (US #12, IL #4) to win the 3200 Meter Run by 24 seconds ahead of Lincoln-Way West’s Evan Mitchell (9:35.06). Tyler Elmore of Bolingbrook ran 6.98 to win the 60 Meter Dash winning by just two hundredths of a second ahead of Sandburg’s Ayo Abiona (7.00, IL #6). Abiona also jumped 22-8 to win the Long Jump.

The field performance of the meet came from John Meyer of Lockport Township in the Shot Put. The junior achieved a personal best and the best performance in the state with a 64-4 (US #5) effort to win the even. Dazhee Horton of Bradley-Bourbonnais had a personal best 45-6 mark (IL #9) to win the Triple Jump.

Upstate Eight Boys Indoor Championships @ Batavia

Batavia dominated this meet scoring 163 points to finish ahead of St. Charles East (110 points). Jay Hunt led his team with a pair of wins. The Batavia senior cleared a state best 6-9 to win the High Jump. He also ran 22.90 to win the 200 Meter Dash just eight hundredths of a seconds ahead of Michael Pryor of West Aurora (22.98). Pryor won the 55 Meter Dash earlier in the meet (6.53, IL #10) ahead of Batavia’s Jeremiah Evans (6.64).

One of the bigger surprises of the meet came when Batavia freshman Adam Kennedy ran 2:00.55 to win the 800 Meter Run just nipping S. Charles East’s JB Sandlund at the line by one hundredth of a second.

Davion Cross of West Aurora won both horizontal jump events. His 22-4 (IL #7) mark was the top jump in the Long Jump. Cross also jumped 45-9.75 (IL #7) to win the Triple Jump. Batavia took the top two spots in the Shot Put with Ross Berggren’s 54-7 put winning by three feet ahead of Elijah Green.

WSC-Silver Girls Indoor Championships @ York

Downers Grove North had the edge in this high-powered meet at York. The Trojans scored 93.5 points to win the conference title by just four points ahead of Lyons Township (89.5 points). Oak Park-River Forest (86 points) and Glenbard West (80 points) finished third and fourth.

The story of the meet once again was the performances from Glenbard West’s Freshman Phenom Katelynne Hart who won two individual races and was part of a winning relay. Hart ran the anchor on Glenbard West’s winning 3200 Meter Relay (9:40.10) that finished four seconds ahead of Hinsdale Central (9:44.88). Hart and Downers Grove North’s Emma Moravec had a great race in the 800 Meter Run. Hart ran a state best 2:14.09 to win the race with Moravec running 2:15.53 (IL #2) placing second. Hart came back to run 4:56.62 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Hart’s teammate Lindsey Payne ran 10:56.81 to win the 3200 Meter Run less than three seconds ahead of Lyons Township’s Sarah Barcelona.

Isabel Maletich had a great meet in the jumps that helped Downers Grove North in their team win. Maletich achieved a personal best 18-6.5 (IL #7) to win the Long Jump. She then jumped 37-3 (IL #9) to win the Triple Jump. Proviso West’s Tanayea Kimbrough was a double winner running 7.43 to win the 55 Meter Dash and 26.25 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Kimbrough was also a part of Proviso West’s 1:46.40 time in winning the 800 Meter Relay ahead of Hinsdale Central (1:46.76). Downers Grove North clinched the team title when they ran 4:08.33 to win the 1600 Meter Relay.

GCAC & CCL Indoor Championships @ University of Chicago

Loyola Academy won the GCAC Girls Championships with 108 points. Mother Mcauley (88 points), Saint Ignatius Prep (87 points), and Rosary (82 points) finishing second through fourth.

Rachel Funches of Mother McAuley was a double winner in the sprints. She ran 7.99 to win the 60 Meter Dash just one hundredths of a second ahead of Fenwick’s Colleen Grogan. It was just as close in the 200 Meter Dash as Funches ran 26.41 to win again by just one hundredth of a second ahead of De La Salle’s Jada Price. Funches almost won the 400 Meter Dash running 1:00.11 to finish second behind the 58.92 (IL #8) winning time by De La Salle’s Kailyn Thrash.

Aryn Lyke of Saint Ignatius Prep was a double winner with 16-9.5 to win the Long Jump and 34-6.5 to win the Triple Jump.

The Chicago Catholic League Championships in the afternoon session at the University of Chicago came down to the 1600 Meter Relay. A strong anchor leg by Gavin Jaimie gave Providence Catholic the event win and league title. Providence Catholic scored 99 points for the win finishing ahead of Loyola Academy (92 points) and Marmion Academy (80 points).

Jaimie had a great day winning two individual events along with his anchor leg in the 1600 Meter Relay. Jaimie ran an indoor personal best of 50.66 (IL #5) to win the 400 Meter Dash. He came back to run 22.87 to win the 200 Meter Dash. He was back on the track less than 20 minutes later to help Providence Catholic the win in the relay (3:33.43) ahead of Loyola Academy (3:37.47).

Seth Groom of Marmion Academy won two events with a 6-3 clearance to win the High Jump and 43-9 jump to win the Triple Jump. Groom also finished third in the Long Jump as Theo Phipps of St. Rita jumped 21-11.75 to win the event. Phipps also had some success on the track. He ran a personal best of 8.47 in the prelims of the 60 Meter Hurdles. He came back to run 8.51 to win in the finals.

Andrew Niewiarowski of Loyola Academy ran 1:59.20 to win the 800 Meter Run by more than two seconds. Michael Ronzone of Marmion Academy won the 1600 Meter Run (4:29.57) just ahead of Niewiarowski (4:30.12). Paolo Tiongson of Loyola Academy won the 3200 Meter Run (9:30.10) finishing eight seconds ahead of Ronzone.
