Will both the 2A Boys individual and team races be certainties just after noon on Saturday? It certainly looks like it.  Mahomet-Seymour looked almost unbeatable in their conference race when they put six runners under 15 minutes. Will that domination continue at this meet? Normal University, Grayslake Central and a group of schools certainly hope that it doesn’t. Jack Aho will look to repeat his 2015 2A title. Jack Franklin could be the one runner to push him.

Here is a look at each of the qualifying teams as well as some of the top individuals in the race on Saturday.

Teams

Preview – Metamora Sectional Champion. I am sure that the Bulldogs are remembering that they entered last year’s state meet as the favorite but finished second in the state finals race behind Grayslake Central. The situation is the same entering this state meet as they are the favorites again. The thing that catches everyone’s attention this year about this team is how dominating that they have been. They finished second at the Richard Spring Invitational not too far behind nationally ranked Neuqua Valley. The wow moment was at their conference meet almost three weeks ago when they put six runners under 15 minutes on the fast Maxwell Park course. Ignore the regional and sectional race results. The Bulldogs ran portions of each of their top seven in each race. Andrew Walmer, Gabe Pommier, and Riley Fortune are their top runners. They could be in the top ten in this race. The possibility is there for this team to put five or even six runners in the top 25 if they just run their race like they have for most of the season. It could be tough for any other team to touch them especially if their split stays near 20 seconds on their scorers.

Preview – Finished second at the Metamora Sectional. The Pioneers did not run their best race at the Corn Belt Conference Meet against Mahomet-Seymour and their six runners under 15 minutes. I think we will see a different race from U-High on Saturday. Just like Mahomet, they did not run all of their normal top seven in their sectional race. Jack Franklin ran 14:31 at the beginning of October on Detweiller Park’s course and will be among the leaders in this race. Teammate Jared Shuckman has ran 14:52 in the same race and could be in the top ten on Saturday. Keep an eye on their 5 man split in this race. It was at 86 seconds when Franklin and Shuckman had those fast times in October. The split was 47 seconds at their conference meet. The team could have a 60 second split on their top five in this week’s race. Their key is getting their third runner within ten seconds of Shuckman and then a split of 20 to 23 seconds on their third through fifth runners. If they can keep that pack close, they will be in the running for a trophy…possibly the state championship trophy.

Preview – Belvidere Sectional Champion. Defending 2A champion Jack Aho is back and should be the big favorite in this race. His brother Matt Aho should be among the top five in this race. It is nice to have two low sticks in your scoring column when you are finishing. The key for the Rams is to get the pack closer to the two Aho brothers. Eli Minsky has been within 58 seconds of Jack this year as the team’s third runner. It would help if he finishes 45 to 50 seconds back in this race. A concern for this team all year has been the gap between front runner Aho and their fourth and fifth runners. It has been near 115 seconds on their fourth most of the year and close to 120 seconds on their top five most of the year. With the Aho brothers doing their thing up front, Minsky needs to be in the top 30 in this race as well as a split on five under 100 seconds. All of these things happening could get Grayslake Central in the mix for a trophy.

Preview – Finished third at the Metamora Sectional. The Redbirds did not run their best race on their home course last week but still remain a threat to get a trophy this weekend. Jake Gillum has been the top runner for this team all year. He will be in the top ten in this race possibly the top five. Freshman Adam-Gilbreath-Glaub is one of the top freshmen in the state and could finish in the top 25. The split on the top five last week was 112 seconds. The talent is there for this group to be within 70 seconds of each other. That could put them in position to challenge for a finish in the top 3 teams.

Preview – Finished second at the Belvidere Sectional. The Tigers are in position to finish in the top three this weekend. Cole Barkocy has been the first runner for Central most of the season with the potential of finishing in the top fifteen in this state race. Weston Sterchi was 20 seconds behind his teammate last week but could be as close as 10 seconds. That could put him in the top 25. Brandon Tomasello has been a big plus for this team. He has given them a strong first three that could have 3 in the first 40. Their split on five has been going up the past few weeks. Part of that has to do with the way Barkocy is running right now. It was 85 seconds in their sectional race. A split of 70 seconds or under puts the Tigers in the mix for a trophy.

Preview – Finished fourth at the Belvidere Sectional. Sterling will run in the state meet on Saturday for the first time in 33 years. Jacob Gebhardt and Jacob Landis give the Golden Warriors a strong 1-2 punch up front. Both could finish in the top 15 on Saturday. The pack behind these two runners has propelled this team to where they are at. The team’s split was 90 seconds on five last week. It has been as low as 78 seconds during the season. Keep an eye on Bryce Tessmann. The transfer from South Carolina has fit in nicely with this team. He could be the team’s third runner placing in the first 50. A good race from this team gets them into the top five.

Preview – Finished second at the Decatur MacArthur Sectional. When you talk about this 2016 Danville team, you have to start with strong pack running. There are no superstars on this team but have five runners that will be within 30 seconds of each other. Their top runner early in the year Phillip Hall has not been running well the past few weeks because of illness. All that happened was William Powell stepped into his spot and the team did not miss a beat. You may not see a runner in the thirty for this team. But they could put five runner in between 40th and 65th place. If they can keep their split under 30 seconds, the Vikings could be challenging to finish among the top 5 teams.

Preview – Finished third at the Decatur MacArthur Sectional. The Titans did not have their best race of the season last week but still remain a threat to finish in the top five. Chris Durr has emerged as the team’s top runner as well as a possibility to finish in the top 15. Dathon and Drey Maton along with Cooper Peterson give the e team a strong 2-3-4 behind Durr. Peterson did not have his best race of the year as he was the team’s fifth runner. If he can stay within five seconds of the Matons, it puts Glenwood in good finishing position. The split on the scorers last week was 67 seconds. Anything under 50 at state will be a big help for this team.

Preview – Decatur MacArthur Sectional Champion. Marion ran their best race of the year so far in winning last week. John Bruce stepped up as the team’s top runner last week. Zach Young has been their #1 man most of the season. The two could run within 5 seconds of each other and finish in the top 25. The biggest improvement for this team during the year has been the pack behind the front duo. Juniors Ryan Melvin and Levi Bryant have improved with Bryant within 34 seconds of Marion’s front last week. The split on Marion has been near 80 seconds for most of the year. If they run that type of split, it could secure a top 10 finish.

Preview – Finished third at the Belvidere Sectional. Stephen Poorten has been the top runner for the Spartans all year. He was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his tibia and will not race on Saturday. Without Poorten, it could be tough for the Spartans to finish in the top ten. Connor Farrell will step in to the number one spot and could finish in the first sixty. A split under 60 seconds could get this team close to the top ten.

Mateo Nunez has been the team’s first runner and could finish in the top 25 on Saturday. The split on their top five grew to 107 seconds last weekend. It will need to be between 70 to 75 seconds for this team to have a top 10 finish.

Preview – Finished fourth at the Metamora Sectional. The Irish were the best of five close teams as they finished fourth making it back to state. Patrick Bruch has been the team’s top runner all season. He could finish in the top 40 at state. The split on five has gone down to 88 seconds from the close to 2 minute spread that it was earlier in the year. Mitch Maushard finished 22 seconds behind Bruch last week. If he can stay that close as well as the pack running within 50 seconds of each other, Notre Dame could find their way into the top ten.

Preview – Finished fourth at the Decatur MacArthur Sectional. The Senators make it back to Detweiller Park led by senior Jackson Esela and freshman Kyle Boughter. The two runners have been within ten seconds of each other during the year. The possibility is there for both to finish in the top 50 on Saturday. The pack for Springfield needs to be under 70 seconds for them to challenge to finish in the top ten. When they ran almost equal to Chatham-Glenwood at the Central State Conference Meet, the split was only 43 seconds.

Preview – Finished fifth at the Metamora Sectional. The Eagles get to Peoria but just by two points. Drew Fick and Carson Potts have been close together all season and should be again on Saturday. That could put both of them into the top 60 individually. The split on their top five has hovered around 74 seconds in the second half of the season. The split form their third to fifth runners last week was only 9 seconds. If the trio can get to 58 to 61 seconds of Fick/Potts, the Eagles have a chance to finish between 10th and 15th.

Preview – Finished fifth at the Belvidere Sectional. An incredibly tight pack got the Dukes out of the toughest sectional in the state. Their split was only 13 seconds on their top five. Sean Masterson and Jonah Fulton finished side by side last week and should lead this team again on Saturday. It is hard to imagine this team to run that close together especially in a bigger field. Dixon was not expected here but here they are. They should finish in the top fifteen. If they have another race like last week at Belvidere, who knows how high this team can finish?

Preview – Finished fifth at the Wheaton Academy Sectional. The Crusaders top seven ran together for only the third time last week at Kress Creek Farms. Before that, the components in that seven ran in different races. That continuity that is built through pack running during the season was not there when this team finished fifth. Watch for this team to bounce back this week with a better race. Joe Sweeney has been the team’s top runner and could finish among the top 75 runners. Their pack was 20 seconds slower than it was the other two times that the team ran together. A split under 60 seconds on their scorers could get them close to the top 15 in this state race.

Joseph was ahead of Haffner by 16 seconds last week. Watch for the two to be closer to each other on Saturday. The spit between the duo and the pack has been around 50 to 55 seconds during the year. If they can stay within 47 seconds of the front and have an overall split of 80 seconds or under, the Hornets could finish in the top 15.

Preview – Finished fifth at the Decatur MacArthur Sectional. The Trojans were perhaps the biggest surprise to make it to Peoria especially after finishing fifth the week before in their regional race. The team did not run out of their heads last week but just an average race with a split of 81 seconds on their top five. Nick Oakley and Austin Ames finished within 6 seconds of each other last week. The pack of their third through fifth runners was only 9 seconds at Decatur. If they can keep that split on those three and get to within 55 seconds of their front runners, Charleston could finish 15th or better.

Preview – Finished second at the Wheaton Academy Sectional. One of the biggest surprises regardless of any classification in the state this year. This is the first state appearance for the IMSA cross country program. Veteran Coach Paul McLeland has molded this team into a squad that could finish in the top ten. Daniel Chen has been their top runner and could finish in the top 25 individually. The top five split last week was at a season’s best 88 seconds. Braxton Schuldt was within 31 seconds of Chen last week. If he can get within 25 seconds of his teammate with an overall split of 75 seconds on their scorers, a top 10 finish is a possibility.

Preview – Fenton Sectional Champion. The Bison have come on strong the past month with the addition of Jose Vasquez-Perez. The #1 runner from a year ago missed most of the season due to an injury. The emergence of Cristian Sanchez as the top runner during the year gives Fenton a good 1-2 punch up front. Their split of their top five last week was only 21 seconds. It was their best by almost half a minute. A split like that this week could get Fenton among the top 15 schools in this meet.

Preview – Finished second at the Fenton Sectional. Sam Brey has been the team’s top runner all year and could finish among the top 50 individuals. The Lions did not run their best race last week as they had a 94 second split on their scorers. A split in the 62 to 66 second range could get this team into the top 20.

Preview – Finished third at the Fenton Sectional. Alejandro Vargas has been the team’s top runner all year. The addition of three frosh/soph runners to the varsity at the state series has helped this team get to the position of where they are at. The split was 76 seconds on five last week. That split coming down by 10 seconds could get this team into the top 20.

Preview – Finished fifth at the Fenton Sectional. The Tigers made it back to Peoria even without their top runner for most of the season Amadeus Lopez no longer on the team. Devon Schumann stepped up last week to lead the team. Their split on three last week was only 4 seconds. The pack needs to move forward in the race as well as keeping the top five within 55 seconds of each other. That could push Elmwood Park into the top 20 teams.

Team Summary

Mahomet-Seymour happened a year ago when Grayslake Central ran by them for the state championship. There is no more revisiting that race. The Bulldogs made a statement in their conference meet. We could see another on at high noon on Saturday. Normal University is the closest team to challenge Mahomet Seymour. They could have the front runners to challenge Mahomet up front. Can their pack get close to their conference rival?

Grayslake Central has the firepower up front with Jack Aho ready to defend his state title and his brother Matt finishing in the top five. Their three other scorers need to cut down the split so the Rams can go after a trophy. Danville has a tight pack that could challenge. Crystal Lake Central came within nine of Grayslake Central last week and could surpass them in this meet. More runners in the field could hurt teams with the big splits. Marion, Chatham-Glenwood, Metamora, and Sterling are squads that we could see in the top three when the final results are posted.

Individual summary

Jack Aho is the defending champion and will be tough to beat in this race. His only loss this year came at the Palatine Invitational to 3A runners Charlie Kern and Brian Griffith. Aho has been under 14:20 twice this season.

The pack behind him should push him to a fast time. Jack Franklin (Normal University HS) ran 14:31 on this course a month ago and could be his chief competition. Matt Aho has run 14:32 and could be close to Franklin. Ben Flowers (Jersey HS) ran 14:45 and Jacob Gebhardt (Sterling HS) ran 14:46 in different races a month ago in Peoria. You can’t forget about Mahomet-Seymour’s Gabe Pommier, Andrew Walmer, and Riley Fortune who all could be challenging in the top five.

Other runners to watch for include Jake Gillum (Metamora HS), Matthew Richtman (Kaneland HS, Maple Park), Jared Shuckman (Normal University HS), Filip Pajak (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake), Zach Young and John Bruce (Marion HS), and Cole Barkocy (Crystal Lake Central HS).
