Extra work does not hurt Yorkville in winning own invitePublished by

Yorkville – There were two questions that needed to be answered on Monday. The first was whether the cloud cover would disappear before the solar eclipse became a reality. The second question was whether Yorkville’s opening meet of the year would be cancelled due to the hot temperatures and the high humidity. The answer to both questions were no. Yorkville made a compensation to the weather by pushing the meet back one hour. That paid off as could cover came in and dropped the temperatures close to 80 degrees. Yorkville Girls Coach Chris Muth decided before the question was answered whether there would be a meet or not. “We figured that the meet would be cancelled. I decided to get our workout in the morning. If the meet was called off, we would not be able to get a run in,” Muth said. “We got the run in as well as the race. The girls raised up to the challenge today. A little extra work does not hurt this early in the season.” 3A #3 Yorkville accepted the challenge after their six-mile morning run winning the Yorkville Invitational putting the first five runners across the line. Their perfect score of 15 bettered that of second-place Oswego East (69 points) and Rosary (70 points). Yorkville’s Emily Eberhart pushed the pace early in the race as the Lady Foxes had five of the first six spots. Only Abby Flammersfeld of Oswego East had broken the Yorkville pack. On the second loop of the course, Yorkville’s Olivia Borowiak took over for Eberhart and never looked back. It was the second year in a row that Borowiak has one the individual title in this meet. The junior crossed the line in 18:18.3 some 23-seconds ahead of teammate Alyssa Edwards. Freshman Helena Kleronomos was next (18:43.2) followed by Eberhart (18:50.2) and Victoria Crawford (18:59.8). Yorkville had a five-runner split of 41.5 seconds. Claire Hengesbaugh of Rosary broke up the Yorkville pack finishing sixth (19:02.6) just ahead of Flammersfeld (19:05.8). “My legs felt a little sore in the beginning. You just have to push through it,” Borowiak said afterwards. It was Yorkville that came out on top with five runners in the first six places. The Foxes scored 19 points doubling the difference ahead of Oswego East (38 points). There was no question in the individual race. Yorkville’s Patrick Black broke open the race just after the first mile and cruised to the win. Black tied the course record with his 15:58.0 winning time. Oswego East’s Luke Wentz moved the last mile to finish second (16:24.2) just ahead of Yorkville’s Ben Summers (16:25.7). Yorkville’s five runner split was 44.3 seconds. That’s not a bad start for the beginning of the season. “I wasn’t really looking at time (goals) because of the heat,” Black said. “I just went out and competed. The time just came with it.” WATCH BLACK’S FULL INTERVIEW
