It was another momentous year for Illinois distance runners.

Soren Knudsen of Minooka may have had the best of them all. After winning the 3A title at Detweiller Park in the fall, Knudsen overcame injuries and illnesses to have a great spring campaign. His 8:55.70 in the 3200 Meter Run that he ran at Conant at the beginning of May was a solo effort winning by 27-seconds. He played with the field at state in that distance pulling away for the state title. He came back in a memorable race with Lake Zurich’s Brian Griffith in the 1600 Meter Run just edging him at the line for the win in 4:10.51. Knudsen followed that up the next week by running 4:05.58 for a full mile at Magis Miles in Chicago.

Chris Conrad of O’Fallon had a great race at state pulling away from the field just after 400-meters in the 800 Meter Run. His winning time of 1:49.91 was the sixth fastest nationally this season.

Clayton Mendez of Whitney Young came back from a sub-par cross-country season putting up some great times in the 3200 Meter Run. He started out indoors running 9:01 at the end of February at Proviso West. He broke nine minutes for the first time at Distance Night in Palatine in April running 8:59.46. Mendez finished third at the state meet. He followed that up by earning All-American honors finishing fourth in the 2 Mile Run at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

Danny Kilrea of Lyons Township ran 9:10 or faster for 3200 Meters / 2 Miles seven times this season. Dylan Jacobs of Sandburg earned all-state honors in the 1600 Meter Run in Charleston. His 1:52 anchor leg in the 3200 Meter Relay early in the meet bringing Sandburg up to second place will stick in our minds for years to come. It will be fun to see Jacobs, Mendez, Kilrea, and York’s Charlie Kern race against each other at Detweiller Park this November. It could be one of the most memorable in the history of the state.

Congratulations to Soren Knudsen of Minooka High School as the 2017 ILXCTF.com 3A Boys Distance Events Athlete of the Year.
