Illinois Track & Field Athletes of the Year – 2A Girls Sprints/Hurdles EventsPublished by
By Michael Newman, ILXCTF.com Editor
The sixth and final state championship that Mariya Hudson of Cahokia might have been her best state meet race ever. It was just a three hundredth of a second win ahead of Decatur Eisenhower’s Tina Martin that forced her to the O’Brien Field track. She typified leaving everything on the track for her team. She was the energy that made the Cahokia Girls team’s engine go. In the four years that Hudson attended Cahokia, the team won three state championships and a second place finish this past May. Hudson earned all-state honors 15 times including three state championships in the 400 Meter Dash, two state championships in the 200 Meter Dash, and one title in the 100 Meter Dash her sophomore year. It is a number that will be tough to duplicate for an Illinois athlete. Katina Martin of Decatur Eisenhower had a great breakout junior season defeating Hudson at the state finals in the 100 and 200 Meter Dash. Imani Carothers won her second straight state crown in the 100 Meter Hurdles running the fastest time in the state in the process. Kathryn Best of Wheaton Academy competed in the 300 Meter Hurdles for the first time in her career leaving Charleston with a state title. It all came down to Hudson and what she did this year running the state’s fastest time in the 200 and 400 Meter Dash and the second fastest time in the 100 Meter Dash. The title at state in the 400 Meter Dash was just icing on the cake. Congratulations to Mariya Hudson of Cahokia High School as the 2017 ILXCTF.com 2A Girls Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Year.
