Anna Sophia Keller of Effingham St. Anthony lost only one time in Illinois High School competition. That happened her freshman year when she stumbled and fell ten meters from the finish of the 3200 Meter Run as Byron’s Kelsey Hildreth passed her for the win. There was no other time that an athlete came that close.

Keller was undefeated during her high-school career in cross-country meets in Illinois. Other than the 3200 Meter Run her freshman year, there was no one that came close to passing her. Keller, who will attend the University of Notre Dame this fall, ended her high school career with 11 state titles (including cross-country) and one second-place finish. She will go down in the history of Illinois High School Girls distance running as one of the most decorated. It was fitting that in the last 100 meters of the 1600 Meter Run at Charleston that she received a standing ovation fitting for the champion that she is.

Daly Galloway of Dwight deserves the same type of recognition. She was always in the shadows of Keller but did end up earning 12 all-state medals in cross country and track during her high school career. Not too many other athletes leaving high school can say that.

Arielle Summit of Urbana University came strong at the end of the year winning her second straight title in the 800 Meter Run. She finished second in the 1600 Meter Run finishing ten seconds behind Keller.

You could choose either Summit or Galloway as an athlete of the year in any other year. The dominance of Anna Sophia the past four years makes it tough to ignore that.

Congratulations to Anna Sophia Keller of St. Anthony High School in Effingham as the 2017 ILXCTF.com 1A Girls Distance Events Athlete of the Year.
