Illinois Track & Field Athletes of the Year – 1A Girls Field EventsPublished by
By Michael Newman, ILXCTF.com Editor
There was innocence in the eyes of Kathleen Young after the interview I did with her in 2014. She was a freshman who had won both the Shot Put and the Discus in this classification. At the same time, mixed with that look of innocence there was a glaze of determination in those eyes. We will never see another athlete like Kathleen Young again in the Girls weight events again. There might be an athlete that will surpass the 53-5 all-time Illinois best in the Shot Put. I doubt we will ever see an athlete that will win the Shot Put and Discus in all four years of high school competition at the IHSA State Meet. It did not end the way that Young wanted to as she won her fourth state championship as the competition was pushed indoors due to the rain. She sealed the deal when she threw the Discus for the final time outdoors throwing 150-0 in the finals for the win and her eighth and final state championship. Like I said, we will never see an athlete like Young achieve what she did in the past four years. Young finished second at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in June giving her four All-American honors in the past two years both indoors and outdoors. KD heads now to the University of South Carolina where she will do some big things the next four years on the next level both in and outside of the throwing ring. Congratulations to Kathleen Young of Warrensburg-Latham High School as the 2017 ILXCTF.com 1A Girls Field Events Athlete of the Year. More news |
