IHSA announces classifications for the 2017-2018 school yearPublished by

The Illinois High School Association announced Wednesday afternoon on their website ihsa.org the enrollment sizes, classification ranges and classifications for the 2017-2018 school year. For the upcoming Cross-Country season, Class 1A will go up to schools with enrollments under 707 students, Class 2A from 708 students to 1656 students, and in 3A from 1657 students or greater. For the upcoming track & field season, schools with 471 students or smaller are in 1A, schools with enrollments from 472 to 1301 students is 2A, and schools with 1302 or more students will be in the 3A classification. You can view these ranges here via ihsa.org. There are some “big” changes for the upcoming track season. East St. Louis-Senior has an enrollment for the upcoming school year of 1297 students. They will compete in Class 2A next spring. The Flyers finished second in the 3A state meet in May. Maple Park Kaneland’s enrollment jumped up to 1343 students. They will compete in 3A for rack but will stay in 2A for cross country this fall. The same applies for Vernon Hills, Peoria High School, and Washington who will be in the same situation as Kaneland. Some of the other changes for the track & field season include Normal University Girls program moving down to Class 2A after spending the past two seasons in Class 3A due to the “Success Factor”. Robinson and Reed-Custer will drop back to Class 1A. The Latin School in Chicago will move down to Class 1A for the track season. They will stay in Class 2A for cross-country. There were some notable changes for the upcoming cross-country season. Crystal Lake South moves down to Class 2A along with Normal Community West, Rock Island, and the Marist Boys program, Marist’s girls program remains in 3A. Crystal Lake South’s top returning runner Jack Becker finished 20th in last year’s 3A state meet. He will be one of the top individuals in Class 2A this fall. St. Ignatius Prep’s Girls program moves up to Class 3A after a year in 2A. DePaul Prep’s Boys team moves to Class 2A while Brother Rice’s Boys team moves up to 3A. This appears that this could be Illiana Christian’s school year in the IHSA. Their new building located Indiana appears that it will be ready to open in the fall of 2018. Their boys’ cross-country team has been exiled in Class 3A for the past two seasons due to the “success factor”. For this fall, the Boys program will be back in 2A. The Girls program has been moved from 2A to 1A. Both of their track teams stay in Class 2A. Aurora Central Catholic’s Boys team moves down to Class 1A. Their girls’ team remains in Class 2A this fall. Urbana University’s girls’ team stays in Class 2A for one more year due to the “success factor”. More news |
