Can Yorkville repeat as the 2A Boys state champions? That has been the question that has been asked since the first day of practice in mid-August. Will Jake and Luke Hoffert be the first brothers to finish the 1-2 in a state final race? The closest two brothers have finished up front is when Jorge Torres won and his brother finished third in the 2A finals in 1998.

Yorkville is the favorite to defend their title. Illiana Christian has been waiting for this moment ever since their second place finish a year ago. The Vikings have the fire power up front to challenge for the team championship. Mahomet-Seymour’s second place finish at the Richard Spring Invitational ahead of some 3A powers showed he Bulldogs have the talent to challenge for a trophy. Vernon Hills was 2 points from second behind Illiana Christian a year ago. They would like to repeat that performance on Saturday.

Here is a look at each of the 26 teams that will be competing in the 2A team race along with a preview of the individual race.

Good luck to all athletes, coaches, and fans Saturday afternoon.

Individuals

Immediately after the team results were posted last season, all eyes were on the Hoffert brothers who had finished 3-4 in that race. They have gotten stronger over the past year dropping their times on the track down to a national recognition level. You would think it was foregone conclusion that the two will finish 1-2.

It will be tougher than you think for the two Yorkville runners. Caleb Hummer (Danville HS) will be their biggest roadblock. The senior has gone pretty much injury free this season. There was a small hiccup when he missed a meet in the middle of the year. Hummer rebounded by running 14:42 at Detweiller Park by himself at the Big 12 Conference Meet winning by more than half a minute. He followed that up with a dominating win at his sectional race in Decatur. He ran 14:46. Once again, it was a solo effort.

Alex Keeble (Mahomet-Seymour HS) ran 14:41 to finish in the top 5 at the Richard Spring Invitational. He did not finish the state meet a year ago because he was ill. I am sure that has motivated him to be one of the top runners in 2A this season. He will be a factor up front. Nick Fiene (Illiana Christian HS, Lansing) ran with the Hofferts before fading in the last mile at First to the Finish running 14:50. I am sure he will be in the lead pack in this race.

The thing to watch is how Jake and Luke work off of each other. That will give them a definite advantage in this race. Hummer has the talent to win this race. He could make it difficult for all the other runners up front. The wind will play a big factor in this race with winds close to 20 mph predicted. How tactical will it get? Will it be like John Wold’s race last year where he opened up a 20 second lead in windy conditions only to win by a second?

There are up to 13 individuals that could challenge for a top 25 finish. Runners that I would watch include Lance Mueller and Cole Rodenberg (Waterloo HS), Adam Millburg (Sycamore HS), Luke Beattie (Woodstock HS), Jonathan Landis (Sycamore HS), Brady Carius (Morton HS), Walmer Saavedra (Lindblom HS, Chicago), Eryk Yunk (Belvidere North HS), Matthew Mekaelian and Mark Myers (Lake Forest HS), Clay Musial (Central HS, Burlington), and Matthew Church (East Peoria HS).

Other team runners that have a chance to place in the top 25 include Matt Carr and Thomas Thornton (Limestone HS, Bartonville), Landon Skelly (Glenwood HS, Chatham), Cole Barkocy (Central HS, Crystal Lake), Charlie Nodus (Hinsdale South HS, Darien), Alexander Bruno and Eli Hill (University HS, Normal), Shane Williamson and Tyler Smith (Vernon Hills HS), Filip Pajak (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake), Jake Gillum (Metamora HS), Jack Aho (Central HS, Grayslake), William Wolf (Mahomet-Seymour HS), Heath Warren (Springfield HS), Collin DeYoung and Nick Wondaal (Illiana Christian HS, Lansing), and Trevor Wills (Yorkville HS).

Overview – Yorkville is ready for their title defense. It is always nice to have runners that are going to give you low numbers up front. Such is the case with Jake and Luke Hoffert who will be the favorites in the race. I would have to ignore the team splits for the last three weeks. The two brothers have been holding back just a little bit. That will not be the case for them on Saturday. Trevor Wills has showed vast improvement during the season. He ran a PR 15:14 last week at Kaneland. He could be in the top 15 in this race. The Foxes are deep and interchangeable in their 4th through seventh runners. Last week it was Jake Firrantello and Zack Price’s turn. The 4-5 runners have stayed within 10 seconds of each other. The key is having a 30 second split between Wills and the pack. The split between the Hofferts and the rest of the team is inconsequential. If they have that kind of split with Wills finishing where he should be, it will be hard to stop the Foxes from bring back the state championship trophy.

Overview – People start to take notice of Mahomet-Seymour after they finished second in the high powered Richard Spring Invitational against some tough 3A schools. Now they are ready to take their biggest test of going after a state championship. The Bulldogs will have the strong front runner with Alex Keeble. He should be in the top 5 in this race. William Wolf has stepped up as a strong #2 runner for this team. In the last four races, he has been within nine seconds on the average to Keeble. He may be a little farther back on Saturday, but he should be finishing in the top 15. The 3 to 5 split for Mahomet has been 20 seconds the past few weeks. The key is to have that within 15 seconds of Wolf for the Bulldogs to leave Detweiller Park with the state championship trophy.

Overview – The Vikings have been waiting for this moment for the last year when they finished second in the state after being top ranked most of the season. Illiana will have the same fire power that they had up front last season. Nick Fiene will be challenging for a top 5 finish. He ran 14:50 at First to the Finish in September. Collin DeYoung and Nick Wondaal should be up front. I would expect them to be challenging in the top 15. Tom McGuire has been running close to DeYoung and Wondaal the past couple of weeks. He was seven seconds of Wondaal in the sectional meet. If he is that close on Saturday, he could be in the top 25. The one thing to watch is the five runner split. It has been cut down to 87 seconds last week. If the 4 runners are in all-state positions, they will need their fifth runner to be between 75 to 80 seconds from Fiene. This team has the pieces to win the state championship. It will help that they will be starting right next to Yorkville on Saturday.

Overview – The Cougars were kind of a surprise last season when they finished third at state. They have reloaded and will make another run at a state trophy. Vernon Hills ran a good race at sectionals last week in placing second. Shane Williamson and Tyler Smith will be up front for this team. You can expect Williamson among the top 8 individuals. Smith will need to stay within 10 seconds of his teammate. He will be challenging for a top 15 finish. Keep an eye on the 3 to 5 split. Last week at Kaneland, the three runners were within 14 seconds of each other. That pack needs to be a little snugger for this team to be successful. Rob Williams, the normal #3 runner for this team, has been within 55 seconds of Williamson all year. For this team to contend for a trophy, Williams needs to be within 45 seconds with the pack 10 seconds of each other. Do not be surprised if they leave Detweiller with a trophy. They have the talent to do that.

Overview – Metamora did not run their best race of the season last week when they finished third at East Peoria. John Crotteau, who has been in their top 5 most of the season, did not finish Saturday due to a breathing problem. Crotteau has been part of a strong 2 to 4 pack this year. Having him in the race will help the Metamora fortunes on Saturday. Jake Gillum has been the front runner for the Redbirds all season. I would not be surprised if he is in the top 15 on Saturday. He was only 8 seconds behind East Peoria Sectional champ Alex Keeble and with him most of the race. The 5 runner split needs to be near 50 seconds on Saturday if this team wants to finish in the top 5. A key will be having Matt Wipfler, John Mangold and John Crotteau within 25 seconds of Gillum.

Overview – The Senators ran their best race of the season so far when they won their sectional race in Decatur. Heath Warren could surprise some by finishing in the top ten in this race. The 5 runner split for the team last weekend was 33 seconds. That same kind of split will be needed on Saturday. Logan Besalke and Mike Neposchlan have been within 15 seconds of Warren the past few weeks. That kind of run should place the two in the top 35. The same kind of split with Warren in the top 10 could get Springfield into the top five and in contention for a trophy.

Overview – The Tigers survived the tough Kaneland Sectional finishing fourth. They did that without normal 1-2 runner Jake Cannizzo who did not finish. Cole Barkocy has stepped up to be the front runner for Central. The sophomore could be in the top 25 in this race. If Cannizzo is back, he could be close to Barkocy. If he has not been ahead of him, he has been on the average of 10 seconds of him. The split on 5 without Cannizzo was 74 seconds last week. The Tigers have been running in the low 50’s. That kind of split could put this team in the top five.

Overview – This team will be chasing after a top five finish. In his first year of cross country, sophomore Jack Aho has stepped up to be the top runner for this team. Do not be surprised if he finishes in the top ten. The split between Aho and the rest of the pack has been near 40 seconds. If Max Brunk or Jack Battaglia be within 35 seconds of Aho, the Rams could be in good shape. The 2 to 5 split was a good 26 seconds last week. If that pack is the same and within 35 seconds of Aho, good things could happen for Grayslake Central.

Overview – This is a team that has no real front runner. They have a solid pack that could put up some low numbers on Saturday. Jonah Jones, Jacob Robleski, and Brandon Lach could all be the Warriors’ front runner this weekend. They were only three seconds within each other at the sectional last week. Do not be surprised if that pack comes in between 20th and 30th places. The gap between 3 and 4 could be a problem. It was 39 seconds last week. That needs to come down. This team could be dangerous if their overall split is 30 seconds and they have their front runner near 20th place.

Overview – This could be the hottest team in 2A. The Hornets are peaking at the right time especially after their second place finish in their sectional race. Charlie Nodus was not a runner that was thought at the beginning of the year to be a top 25 runner. He was within seven seconds of Illiana’s Nick Fiene last week. He could be in the top 10 on Saturday. Roman Drabchuk and Vicente Perez give Hinsdale strength behind Nodus. They could finish in the top 40 on Saturday. The Hornets had a 71 second split on five last week. A split of 65 seconds or under could put this team in the top 7 overall.

Overview – It was a miracle that the Titans made it out of the sectional in Decatur. This team has been devastated by injuries. They have lost top 5 runners Gabe Powell, Chris Durr, and Logan Capps. Their depth has picked up loss of those runners and made this team a potential top ten squad. Logan Skelly ran a great race at Decatur finishing 3rd. He could be in the top 15 on Saturday. There will be a gap between Skelly and their 2 through 5 runners. Last week it was 51 seconds. The pack was within 22 seconds of each other. If they can be within 35 to 40 seconds of Skelly with a 20 second split in that pack, then you could see Glenwood in the top ten. They should be a top five team with all the pieces back in 2015.

Thomas Thornton has been running close to Carr the past 3 meets. The two could place in the top 25 at Detweiller. The team had a 61 second split on five last week. Under 60 seconds could put Limestone into the top 10.

Overview – This is a young team that has matured during the season and has become a threat to finish high in the standings Saturday afternoon. Alex Bruno was only 4 seconds behind Sectional champ Alex Keeble last week. Bruno could be in the top 15 in this race. Eli Hill has been up and down this year. If he has a good race Saturday, he could finish in the top 25. Sophomore Jack Franklin has stepped up to be a solid 3rd man for the Pioneers. The split needs to dip near 60 seconds from 70 for this team to place in the top 10.

Overview – The Vikings are running strong at the right time of the season. Another good race at Detweiller could put this team into the top 10. Caleb Hummer will be challenging for the individual state championship. He should provide Danville some low front points. The gap needs to be under 60 seconds from Hummer to 2nd runner Carl Way on Saturday. The 2nd through 5th pack split last week was 45 seconds at Decatur. That needs to come down to 40 seconds with an overall split of 100 seconds for this team to jump into the top 10.

The key to advancing was keeping #1 man Filip Pajak back with the pack. The split between Pajak, Mitch Kazim, and Mike Ostrow last week was only 8 seconds. Pajak has the talent to finish in the top 15 in this race. If he runs towards the front, the team’s split could be near 70 seconds. Last week’s split was only 37 seconds.

He has come on strong and could place in the top 30 on this race. Their split was 34 seconds last week. That kind of effort on Saturday will definitely put Deerfield in the top 15 perhaps in the top 10.

Overview – A big surprise to qualify out of Fenton tying for fifth with Elmwood Park. Part of that had to do with a 36 second 5 runner split that this team ran. Jacob Bonanotte and Sam Brey will need to finish in the top 70 for this team to place higher than 20th.

Overview – The Bison were a little bit of a surprise finishing second ahead of Latin School at last week’s sectional race. Fenton could be in the top 15 on Saturday. They will need Axel Nava in the top 50 with their 5 runner split at 53 seconds or faster.

Overview – The fifth pace team in the Chicago City championships, Payton advanced by finishing 4th at Fenton. Wesley Chan is the front runner on this team that could place among the top 50 runners. Their split was 66 seconds last week. That needs to come down if they want to place higher than 20th.

Overview – Despite losing most of their nucleus, the Tigers bounced back to make it to back to back state meets after tying St. Viator for 5th at Fenton. Part of that had to do with running a 14 second split on their first three runners. Lucas Kieffer has been the #1 runner on this team. The split of 93 seconds last week has to drop at least 20 seconds for this team to finish higher than 20th.

Overview – The Raiders have come on strong at the end of the year resulting in a 4th place finish and a spot on the starting line at Detweiller. Andrew Sundberg has been the top runner for this team. South’s split was 57 seconds last week. If that dips under 50 seconds with Sundberg or Jon O’Rourke in the first 60, this team could finish 15th or higher.

Overview – A tight top 3 split of 18 seconds led by Breandan McClure was the reason why the Spartans finished fifth at Wheaton Academy qualifying for state. Their split dipped to 70 seconds last Saturday on their first 5 runners. That will have to go down a little more for this team to finish higher than 20th.
