The second race of the day at Detweiller Park could be a memorable one. Jon Davis (Oakwood HS, Fithian) has been a tiger most of this season readying himself for a state title defense. He will enter the meet as the individual favorite.

The team finish a year ago was close as Elmwood defeated Winnebago by 6 points. It be close or even closer in this year’s team competition. There could be 8 teams challenging for the 1A state title. Elmwood will look to defend, but top ranked Monticello has looked strong the past two meets. They should be the team to watch. The top three teams from the Oregon Sectional (Rockford Christian, Winnebago, and Johnsburg) all could be in the hunt for a team trophy. Decatur Sectional powers Tolono Unity and Shelbyville should also have a say in who wins the team championship.

Here is a look at each of the teams that will be competing in the 1A Boys race. There is also a preview of what to watch in the individual race.

Good luck to all athletes, coaches and fans this Saturday morning.

Individuals

It is hard to bet against Jon Davis in this race. He could be the runner who is the best physically and mentally prepared runner in this race. He made a statement last week in his sectional race. He ran 14:43 solo. The next runners were close to 40 seconds behind.

Eric Ponder (Tuscola HS) could be Davis’ chief competition. He stayed with Davis until 2 miles at their regional race before Davis pulled away for the win. Nick Monkemeyer (Rockford Christian HS) won his sectional race last week and could provide a challenge. Nathan Smith (Winnebago HS) could also challenge for a top five finish. Andrew Warnes (Unity HS, Tolono) and Matt Norvell (Monticello HS) should be in the front of this race.

There are a number of individual runners that will be in the mix for top 25 finishes. Runners to watch include Wilson Pflederer (Tremont HS), Tanner Chada (Aurora Christian HS), Curtis Reed and Mohammad Hosseini (Mt. Zion HS), Brandon Wilkerson (Tri-Point HS, Cullom), Ross McCormick (Seneca HS), Noah Tennison (Robinson HS), Lucas Lingle (Canton HS), Cory Landon (Carlinville HS), Brayden Hamblen and Seth Williams (Rock Falls HS), and Al Baldonado (Hall HS, Spring Valley).

Team runners that have a chance to finish in the top 25 include Zach Mesplay (Monticello HS), Ethan Stanley (Mid-County HS, Galva), Matt Stelmasek and Noah Miller (Johnsburg HS), Connor Stine (Olympia HS, Stanford), Michael Gleason (Rochester HS), Brennan Guido (St. Joseph-Ogden HS), Marcus Skinner (Shelbyville HS), Bryson Reyes (Newman Catholic, Sterling), Nathan Ambrose (Winnebago HS), Corbin Kakac (Fairfield HS), Hunter Cobbley (El-Paso Gridley HS), Jon Kraus (Freeburg HS), Matt Osmulski and Nate Herridge (Elmwood-Brimfield HS), and Tyler Johnson (Pleasant Plains HS).

Overview – The Sages have come on strong moving into the top spot for the first time at the end of September. This team is thriving off of some good pack running. Matt Norvell has been their front runner all season. I don’t think he will finish any lower than tenth on Saturday morning. Zach Mesplay has been a strong #2 runner for this team. He has been running within five seconds of Norvell. Both runners could be all-state on Saturday. Since the Richard Spring Meet, they have five of their six meets. In the one meet where they finished second (Patriot Invite), their overall split was 50 seconds. In the other meets, their split has been in the mid-30’s. That is the kind of split they will need to win the state championship.

Overview – Unity did not run their best race of the season but finished third behind Monticello and Shelbyville at the sectional meet. Andrew Warnes has been their front man all season. He could be in the top five individually on Saturday. Getch Eisenmenger stepped up mid-season to give this team a boost. He was only 19 seconds behind Warnes last week. Their normal gap between Warnes and the pack has been near 30 seconds with an overall split of 45-50 seconds. Their split will need to be down to 40 seconds to win this meet. Unity will not lose Monticello at the beginning of the race. They will be starting next to each other.

Overview – The defending 1A champions started out slowly as usual. They have been building up steam with visions of repeating their championship. Their front four has been impressive in the past two meets. In the sectional race, they had four runners within 28 seconds of each other. It is possible that they could have 4 runners in the first 30 led by Matt Osmulski and Nate Herridge. The concern area has been the gap between 4 and 5. Their overall split in the last two meets has been 69 seconds at regionals and 63 seconds last weekend. That split has to come down to 48 seconds for this team to have a chance to repeat.

Overview – The Royal Lions have been tested the past three meets. They have come up on top on all three occasions. With their focus now on Saturday, this team could finish on top. Nick Monkemeyer has the talent to be in the top five in this meet. The big question will be the gap between Monkemeyer and the rest of the pack. Last week, it was 43 seconds. The split between their second to fifth runners has been excellent. It has averaged 14 seconds the last two weeks. This team could win but the 1 to 2 gap should be near 30 seconds. Keep an eye on freshman Josh Vogel. He was the second man at their conference and regional meet. He could be a factor for this team on Saturday.

Overview – I am sure that Winnebago is tired of finishing behind Rockford Christian. They have finished second behind their conference rivals the past three meets. Maybe the fourth time is a charm. Nathan Smith and Nathan Ambrose give Bago low numbers in their first two spots. Smith could finish in the top 5. Their split on five last week was 60 seconds. The split the past couple of weeks between #1 runner Smith and #3 Christian Devant has been near 35 seconds. That needs to cut down to 25 seconds for the Indians to have a chance of a trophy.

Overview – Johnsburg has been in the shadows of Rockford Christian and Winnebago most of the season. They have finished third the last three weeks. They could be the surprise for the state championship. Remember, they finished 2nd at First to the Finish earlier in the year behind Christian. Matt Stelmasek and Noah Miller have been the top two runners all season. Both could finish in the top 20. The key for success on Saturday for this team is getting their fifth runner closer to 3 and 4. The overall split grew to 65 seconds last week compared to 49 seconds at their conference race. They could surprise if that split dips to 45 seconds.

Overview – This would be the one team that I would keep an eye on. They seem to be peaking at the right time once again. Marcus Skinner has been the front runner for this team all season. He should be in the top ten in this race. Keep an eye on the split from Skinner to the pack. It has average near 30 seconds the past couple of meets. @5 seconds would be optimal for that gap. They ran a season’s best 58 second five runner split. That has to go under 47 seconds for this team to be in contention for a trophy.

Overview – The Comets have the runners to place in the top five in this meet. Bryson Reyes should be in the top ten in this meet. Their split of 37 seconds last week is a little deceiving especially that Drew Rosengren was ahead of Reyes. Usually the gap this season has been on the average 25 to 30 seconds. Newman Catholic could finish in the top five but will need their 4 runner split with Reyes, Rosengren, Quincy Coomes, and Chris Ahlers to be near 25 seconds with an overall split of 50 seconds on five.

At First to the Finish earlier in the year when they finished fifth, their split was 46 seconds. I expect it to be near 30 to 35 seconds on Saturday. Jon Kraus and Alex Mack should be the front runners for this team.

Overview – The expectations were not that high at the beginning of this year for the Rockets since a couple of key returnees did not come out for the team. Rochester has looked strong the past couple of weeks getting second in their conference meet and winning their regional at Quincy. Michael Gleason has been the top runner for this team. He could be in the top 15 on Saturday. Their five runner split has been hovering near 60 seconds. It will need to be near 53 seconds to finish above tenth place.

Overview – The Spartans could be a surprise in the top six in this meet. Brennan Guido and Austin Earp have been the front runners for this team. Watch for Guido to be in the top 20 in this race. Their split has been in the mid 50’s the past three weeks. If Earp can be within 10 seconds of Guido, the split will come down.

Overview – Tyler Johnson has been running great most of the season. The Elmwood Sectional champ should be in the top five in the individual race. It could be tough for the Cardinals to finish in the top 10. They did drop their 5 runner split down to 101 seconds last week with their 2-5 split at 50 seconds. Both splits need to go down for this team to break into the top 10.

Overview – Mid-County made it to state by finishing fifth at Oregon. Ethan Stanley finished in the top ten at Oregon. He could be in the top 25 in this meet. Bryant VanDeWostine ran a great race last week finishing less than 15 seconds behind Stanley. He could be a surprise for this team in this meet. The split for five last week was 105 seconds. They could finish in the top 15 if the split on five dips below 90 seconds.

Overview – The Illiniweks were a surprise placing fifth at Decatur ahead of two higher ranked teams. This is a pack running team. There are no real stars in their top five. Marshall Allston-Yeagle has been their #1 runner the past few weeks. They ran a tight 30 second split at sectionals. If they can do that again with a runner in the first 40, U-High could finish in the top ten in this meet.

The Lisle Sectional champs could have three runners in the first 40 with Nick Dea, Anthony Alessi, and Mitch Perrotta leading the way. There is a close to a 100 second split from three to four. Their overall split was over 2 minutes last week. If that can go close to 110 seconds, good things could happen for this team.
