This could be the one race in this state meet that there will be no question of who will be the favorites in the team and individual races. Maryjeanne Gilbert is the overwhelming favorite in the individual race. If the conditions are good, Gilbert could go after the state record. The question will be who will finish second behind the Notre Dame runner?

The team race is just as solid. Defending champion Yorkville looks to go for their fourth state championship in a row. The Foxes are a deep team that could have as any as five all state runners in this race. It could be up for grabs for the second spot as Belvidere North, Dunlap, Crystal Lake Central, and Lake Forest have the runners to challenge for a state trophy.

Here is a look at each of the team that will be running in the 2A race. There is also a preview spotlighting some of the top individuals in this race.

Good luck to all athletes, coaches, and fans Saturday morning!

Individuals

It is hard to think that anyone will be ahead of Maryjeanne Gilbert (Notre Dame HS, Peoria). The junior has been untouchable this season winning by more than a minute ahead of her 2A competition. Her 16:09 on the 2.94 Black Partridge course demonstrates that she could get close to the 16:02 course record at Detweiller Park. She ran 16:30 earlier in the year at the Richard Spring Invitational. A wind may slow these times down Saturday morning. They will not slow down Gilbert though.

There are a number of runners that will challenge for the second spot. Jenna Lutzow (North HS, Belvidere) has been tough all season with her latest win coming last week at the Kaneland Sectional. Skyler Bollinger (Yorkville HS) finished sixth in that race. She has the talent to challenge. Abby Jockisch (Dunlap HS) ran 17:26 at Detweiller Park to win the Mid Illini Conference Meet. She could finish in the top five. Caitlyn Allen (Marengo HS) finished 5 seconds behind Lutzow at Kaneland. I would not count her out.

There could be up to ten individual runners that could finish in the top 25. Runners to watch include Delaney Appino (Boylan Catholic HS, Rockford), Lauren Whitehouse (Mahomet-Seymour HS), Mercedes Elliot (Danville HS), Emily Martin and Madison Ronzone (Rosary HS, Aurora), Kate Jacobs (Woodstock HS), Abigail Richter (Triad HS, Triad), Mya Shannon (Morris HS), Megan Shaffer (Mattoon HS), Kortney Schardt (Lakes HS, Lake Villa), and Natalie Motor (Springfield HS).

Team runners that could finish in the top 25 include (Vivian Overbeck (Vernon Hills HS), Grace Oetting (Charleston HS), Janine Orvis (Central HS, Crystal Lake), Demi Dixon (Glenwood HS, Chatham), Lauren Dauffenberg, Summer Peirson, Alexis Grandys, and Maggie Klemm (Yorkville HS), Karina Liz and Abby Fioresi (Aurora Central Catholic HS), Abigail Nadler (Latin School, Chicago), Rebecca Sippel and Caroline Arlaskey (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn), Emma Chelsvig (Jacksonville HS), Emma Milburn (Lake Forest HS), Shannan Supan (University HS, Normal), Carley Lutzow (North HS, Belvidere), Francesca Verville (Dunlap HS), Gianna Salzbrunn (Montini Catholic HS, Lombard), and Taylor Campos (Lemont HS).

Overview – The Foxes packed it up to win their sectional by only 17 points ahead of Belvidere North with a 38 second split. Skyler Bollinger hung back with the pack in that race. Expect her to be towards the front on Saturday. This is a young team with no seniors in the top 12. Two or three runners that toe the line on Saturday have state meet experience. Yorkville does not run like an inexperienced team. They could have up to four all-state runners in this race. They have won three state championships in a row. The fourth title is in their sites if they can just run like they have all season.

Overview – Freshmen have powered this Dunlap team this season. They only won their sectional meet by five points ahead of Peoria Notre Dame. The Eagles were without usual front runner freshman Francesca Verville who was held out due to an injury. She should be racing on Saturday. Abby Jockisch should be the lead runner up front. She could be in the top five individually. With Verville in the lineup, Dunlap could have 3 in the top 23. If they could do that with a team split of 85 seconds or lower, this team should leave Detweiller with a trophy.

Overview – The Scouts finished 4th in the tough Kaneland Sectional. They still have the talent to finish in the top three this Saturday. Freshman Emma Milburn has the #1 runner all season. She could be in the top 10 in this race. Katie Condon was a little further back behind Milburn last week than she usually is. You can expect that gap to close. Lake Forest can get a trophy, but will need Milburn in the top 10 and Condon in the top 25 along with a 50-52 split on their first five.

Overview – This team has been a force since they finished second behind Yorkville at First to the Finish in September. Jenna Lutzow will challenge for a top 3 finish. Her sister Carley could be in the top 15. The Blue Thunder ha a 3-5 split of 15 seconds last week. If that pack can stay within 35 seconds of Carley Lutzow with that kind of split, Belvidere North should finish in the top three. If Yorkville is off of their race, the Blue Thunder could end up on top.

Overview – The Tigers only ran a 28 second 5 runner in split in route to finishing third at Kaneland last week. They could be in the mix for a trophy. Mary Fleming and Janine Orvis have been trading off the top spot most of the year. They could finish between 15th and 25th in this meet. In the big meets, Central has kept their five within 35 seconds of each other. That kind of effort could push the Tigers in the top 3.

Overview – This team has been flying under the radar most of the year. They dominated tough meets at Rosary and Wheaton Academy the past two weeks showing this team could contend for a trophy. Taylor Campos ran her best race of the year to help the Indians win last week. She could be in the top 15 on Saturday. The key to Lemont’s success this year has been their pack. Last week the split on five was 46 seconds with their 2-5 split of only 18 seconds. If the Indians’ split gets near 35 seconds on Saturday with Campos up front, a top finish could be in their sights.

Overview – The name of the game at the sectional race is get in the top five so you have the opportunity to race at state. That is what Vernon Hills did last week. The Cougars finished third a year ago and would like to repeat that performance this weekend. Vivian Overbeck has been the #1 runner for this team. She should be in the top ten individually. The pack will be the key for this team behind Overbeck. The 2-5 split last week was 40 seconds. That needs to get lower for the team to leave Detweiller with a trophy.

Overview – How do you figure out Notre Dame’s final score at state? Just add their 2, 3, 4, and 5 runners’ scores and then add one. Maryjeanne Gilbert is the big favorite in this race. The Irish could also do some damage in the team race. Ignore their overall split especially with Gilbert way up front. Their 2-5 split last week was 45 seconds. It has been as low as 28 seconds this season. With that kind of split and a runner in the top 30 behind Gilbert, the Irish could keep a trophy in Peoria.

Overview – Latin School has made the move from 1A to 2A a smooth one this season. Ignore the fact that the sectional that they were in last week was not the strongest. The Romans still have the talent to place in the top 5 after finishing 3rd a year ago in 1A. Abigail Nadler has been their front runner all year. She could be in the top 15. Sophia Lancaster could be in the top 25 in this race also. Their split on five last week was 51 seconds. A similar split on Saturday could get Latin School into the top 5.

Overview – A team that could be in the top five in this meet. Shannan Supan has been up front all season. She could finish in the top 15 in this race. Madigan Landess was within 24 seconds of her teammate last week as the #2 runner. If she is closer, it gives the team a better chance to finish higher. The five runner split was 88 seconds last week. It is capable of getting near 70 seconds for the Pioneers on Saturday.

Overview – Here come the Raiders again peaking at just the right time. South could be a surprise in the top 6 in this meet. Rebecca Sippel and Caroline Arlasky have the talent to finish in the first 15. Sippel could contend in the first 5. Abby Schlenker leads a strong pack behind them.  Their split last week was 107 seconds. That might not matter especially with Sippel towards the front. If their pack can stay at 46 seconds or tighter, then Glenbard South could be making some noise towards the top of the standings.

Overview – The Broncos just escaped out of Wheaton Academy advancing on a fifth place tie with Aurora Central Catholic. The main thing is that they are on the line Saturday morning. Gianna Salzbrunn leads this team. Their 5 runner split has averaged near 100 seconds this year. That needs to come down if this team wants to finish in the top 10.

Overview – The Warriors qualified for state for the first time in 6 years. Sisters Annika and Gretchen Pearson have been the front runners for this team this season. They ran within 7 seconds of each other last week. Their 3-5 split was only 10 seconds. If their overall split is under 50 seconds, Wheaton Academy could finish in the top 10.

Overview – The Titans ran a tight ten second split on their first 3 to help them win their sectional. Demi Dixon could have a bigger gap between her and the team. She was within 3 seconds of Kerraline Wurl last week. This team could be in the top ten using the same packing philosophy with Dixon in the top 30. A 50 second split on five could guarantee that.

Overview – It was improbable at the beginning of this season to say that this team would make it back to state meet especially after graduating the core of their top seven. They are back at state using an influx of freshmen runners in the top 7. Freshman Kara Jacobs has been the top runner on this team the last three weeks. This team could finish in the top 15, but will need a 45 second split on five to achieve that.

Bridget McClain will contend for a top 25 spot this week. Their 5 runner split has averaged 95 seconds at the end of the year. Their 2-5 split last week was 32 seconds. Overview – The Chargers fortunes changed at the end of September when they found out that transfer student Abby Fioresi was declared eligible to run by the IHSA. This team has charged towards the front after that. Karina Liz is having a great xc season and could be in the top 5 in this race. Fioresi has been within 16-18 seconds in the past couple of meets. If she is that close, she could be in the top 25. Their five runner split is over 2 minutes. The Chargers could finish in the top 15 if that split is lowered.

Overview – A team that was a surprise finishing third in their sectional last week. Part of that was due to Grace Oetting’s 2nd place finish in that race. Oetting should be in the top 15 in this meet. The Rojans split on five last week was over 2 minutes last week with a 34 second 2-5 split. If the gap between the pack and Oetting lowers, this team could finish between 15th and 20th.

Overview - The Bulldogs have gone through so much this year. They lost all-state runner Allison Zobrist to an injury. Then add to that missing more than a week of school due to a teacher’s strike. The reward for all of that was a fifth place finish at Decatur. Jayden Shelton has emerged as the #1 runner on this team. Their 5 runner split was only 87 seconds last week. Zobrist was the 5th runner in the conference race three weeks ago. She could run Saturday. It could boost this team.

Overview – The Roadrunners finished sixth last season missing qualifying for state by a couple of points. They did not take a chance this season running their best race of the season placing third at Wheaton Academy. Claire Ramsey has the potential of finishing in the top 25. They had a tight 44 second split on 5 last week. A run similar to that could put them in the top 15 in the team race.

Overview – This team was ranked in the top 20 at the beginning of the year but dropped out in the first week. Their potential was shown at East Peoria when they took the final qualifying spot. They have a strong front three led by Megan Krolak, Lesley Rocha, and freshman Rachel Hickey. The split between the three was 15 seconds last week. They could be a surprise team in the top 15 if they can stay that close at state.
