It will again be close for the 2A state team championship

It looked like Illiana Christian would go wire to wire to win the 2A team championship last fall. They started out the season ranked #1. It looked a little closer after the sectional meet in West Chicago when Yorkville and Illiana both scored 44 points but the Vikings won on the 6th runner tiebreaker. The outcome changed the following week when Yorkville got a great race out of #3 runner Nolan Tweedy to give the Boys program its first state championship an hour after the Girls had won. Will Yorkville sweep again in 2014?

It is too close to call. Yorkville has the strong front running of Jake and Luke Hoffert who could go possibly go 1-2 at state in November. Illiana Christian counters with a strong first four led by Nick Fiene and Collin DeYoung. At this point, the very slight edge goes to Illiana Christian ahead of Yorkville. We will get a good idea who will be #1 on September 13 at First to the Finish in Peoria when the two schools will face each other. They will meet again at the sectional meet at Wheaton Academy. There are some other good teams that will chase after these two including Metamora, Mahomet-Seymour, and Wheaton Academy.

Here is a look of where we see the teams right now in 2A Boys. There are plenty of workouts to run, races to compete in. The only rankings that really count are when the results come out after the state meet.

Top 25 Teams

1 – Lansing Illiana Christian

Coach – Jim Piaskowy

2013 Finish – 2nd – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Nick Fiene SR (7,15:04), Collin DeYoung JR (14,15:14), Nick Wondaal JR (59,15:51), Tom McGuire SR (69,15:56), Jacob Thompson SO, Luke Boss JR, Aaron Knapper JR, Bryan Pirschbacker SR, Jack Peerbolte SO, Ryan Keonitz SO.

Outlook – Illiana Christian will be moving into a new building as you have probably heard. The move into the new facility that is located in Indiana will happen in four years. So all of you 2A Coaches that were hoping that the Vikings would be creating havoc to all of the Indiana schools, you will have to wait. The development of the Boys cross country program has been a steady process. They were ranked #1 throughout the season until they got to the state meet when Yorkville edged them by 15 points. “The close finished motivated them to run a great 4x800 in track at the state meet,” said Coach Jim Piaskowy. “I do not think it is on the minds of the returning runners.”

It may not be on their minds of what happened last fall, but it may have some kind of subliminal motivation every time they have done a workout this summer. Four runners are back from last year’s squad looking to take one more step up to the top of the mountain. Nick Fiene could be one of the most underrated distance runners in the state. Yet, every time he competes you can find him towards the front. He finished seventh a year ago as the first runner for this team and looks to be among the best runners in 2A this season. Collin DeYoung had a hand in the 4x8 last spring and should be the second runner. He should push Fiene for the top spot. The two other returnees are the key for success of this team this fall. Nick Wondaal finished 59th in 2013 at state while teammate Tom McGuire finished 69th. If you look back of the history of the Illiana runners transitioning from their junior to their senior season, there is a dramatic improvement. It would not surprise me if they ended up in the top 30 this season. That would be a huge plus for their team.

The one problem that will haunt most of the teams in 2A is finding a fifth scoring runner. That will apply for this team. The clear choice on paper right now would be Jacob Thompson. He was their seventh man at regionals. On an average last year, there was a 60 second gap between him and McGuire. That needs to get closer this season. There could be a freshman that might jump in or it could be junior Luke Boss.

Illiana could have the strongest first four in 2A this season with the potential of 4 all-state runners. It won’t mean a thing if there fifth runner is in the 100’s. That most likely will not happen. But it is something that will need to be worked on during the season if a 2A state championship is to return to Lansing.

2 – Yorkville

Coach – Chris Muth

2013 Finish – 1st – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Jake Hoffert SR (3,14:40), Luke Hoffert SR (4,14:43), Trevor Wills JR (65,15:53), Jake Firrantello JR (135,16:28), Thor Hester JR (181,16:51), Alexx Nauman SO, Josh Grunke JR, Mason Brant SR, Kevin Schleitwiler JR, Cody Hornyak JR, Brett Staffenberg SO, Darrien Ramos SO.

Newcomers – Patrick Black FR, Zack Price FR

Outlook – If you look at the Yorkville Boys and Girls programs, there is a distinct difference even though both programs let Detweiller Park with state champions. There is a little more of a carefree loose vibe that you get from the Girls when they step off the bus. The Boys are the exact opposite and are business when they take one step on the course. Nevertheless, Coach Chris Muth gets the same outcome from each group of his athletes. Yorkville went through so many injuries during the middle of last season. They did find a way to get together to take a state championship. Five runners are back from that state championship team looking for a repeat.

The summer weather was agreeable to most of the athletes in Illinois including Yorkville. “Summer mileage was where it needed to be with consistent participation and pacing,” Muth said. “The second boys group has put in the summer they needed to help close the gap some on the Hoffert brothers.  If they can continue to develop, we could have a solid team come state series time.” Jake and Luke Hoffert will again be the heart and soul of this team. They are the top two returnees in 2A this year. It most likely will be a battle between the two for the individual championship.

It will be easy to compute Yorkville’s score when we get to the state series races : 1+2 then look for the red jerseys. There is a good group that will behind the Hoffert brothers. Trevor Willis had a good summer of training. He most likely will be the third man for the Foxes after he finished 65th last fall. He could be in the top 30 this year. The surprise in the top five could be the emergence of sophomore Alexx Nauman. Muth expects him to be close to Willis. Jake Firrantello and Thor Hester should also be battling for a spot. Freshmen Patrick Black and Zack Price could also be in the mix.

The development of the 3 to 7 runners will be a big thing to watch this season especially if injuries hit the team again. To run against Illiana, they will need to counteract the 1-4 pack that Illiana has. If Yorkville can place their 3-5 in the first 50, they could earn another state championship. “My expectations are to be consistent in training and in their progressions so that we can get our split as small as possible,” added Muth. “If we can get our split down to about 1:15 off of the twins, we will be in good position.  We want to be more competitive in these big AAA meets and stay healthy throughout the season.”

3 – Mahomet-Seymour

Coach – Neal Garrison

2013 Finish – 15th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Alex Keeble JR, Andrew Walmer SO (62,15:52), William Wolf SR (113,16:16), Gabe Pommier SO (129,16:26), Jackson Powell SR (167,16:43), Jack Hyde JR, Trevor Hanlon SR, Brian Butcher SO, Ben Craw SO, Jake Keller JR, Mason McAnnally JR.

Outlook – The Bulldogs were ranked in the 2A top five most of last season winning the Centennial Regional and the Decatur MacArthur Sectional. It did not work out well at state meet. Their front runner Alex Keeble was sick and was not able to compete. Mahomet-Seymour ended up in 15th. Four runners are back (plus Keeble) looking for completion of what they started a year before.

Keeble would have been in the top ten last year if healthy. He came back strong during the track season earning all-state honors in the 3200 Meter Run finishing fifth. He did run 9:27 in that event during the season. He should be one of the top runners in 2A this season. He started that off running 15:03 at Detweiller at Dark at the end of July.

Keeble should have a strong pack behind him. Sophomore Andrew Walmer was the fifth runner most of last season. At state, he was their first man. William Wolf, Gabe Pommier, and Jackson Powell most likely will be challenging for that spot as well. That could be a good problem for Coach Neal Garrison. Brian Butcher and Jack Hyde had a good summer of training and could challenge for the top five according to Garrison. He also mentioned a talented freshman class coming into Mahomet-Seymour. The more depth the better for this team.

This team should be challenging for a trophy. “I always have high hopes for the team.  The guys are hard workers and young men with great character so I want the best for them.  I believe we have a very realistic chance to qualify for State placing us in the top 20 at State,” Garrison said. “If our young runners step up quickly to having the confidence to race for the top spots in our invitationals then I think we can end up in the top 10 at State.  We will have to piece a few more things together at the State meet both physically and mentally to be able to win a trophy this year.  We of course will give it our best effort to be one of the top three in State, but beating out so many quality programs in the State will be a difficult challenge.  I greatly admire what the top programs in the State have been able to do with their runners and hope someday our school can earn our first cross country State trophy.” Their star junior should be in the top five this year. A pack with a twenty second spread on the 2-5 should be behind him. Where that pack starts will be the key of success for this team in 2014.

4 – Metamora

Coach – Gene Jones

2013 Finish – 6th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – John Mangold SR (28,15:30), Jake Gillum SO (48,15:46), Keaton McClure SR (92,16:02), Matt Wipfler SR (122,16:21), Matt Crotteau JR, Ross Stanley SO, Seth Gunter JR, Gavin Anglin JR, Alex Staab JR, John Crotteau JR, Dylan Hines JR, Ben Hahn JR.

Newcomers – Ryan Meyer FR, Travis Roe FR, Will Cloninger FR

Outlook – This could be a central Illinois team on the rise. Metamora climbed up the rankings last season winning the Normal West Sectional and culminating with a 6th place finish at the state meet. Coach Gene Jones did lose seventh man Jason Argo who moved to Indiana. But he does have four runners back that have state meet experience. “What I have knowledge of in the way of preparation for this season looks good. I believe that they have put in some quality miles,” Jones said.

John Mangold was the lead runner last year for the Redbirds and looks again to be the team leader. He finished 28th a year ago. Expectations are that he could be in the top 15 in November at least. Jake Gillum, who on an average was 15 seconds within Mangold, gives Metamora a strong second runner. It will be a challenge to fill the 3-4 spots left by graduated seniors Joel Anglin and Travis Schierer. Seniors Keaton McClure and Matt Wipfelr could step into those spots. There is a pack of runners behind the two with John and Matt Crotteau, Ross Stanley, and Seth Gunter along with a talented freshman group that could challenge for top seven spots.

The success of last year has put a drive into this team. Metamora could have a strong first two that could be all-state. The team could get a trophy if their five runner split can stay under 55 seconds. “Our 6th place finish in the 2A Boys Meet last year whet the appetite of the Team for this year,” Jones added. “Our Goal is to be runnin' on November the 8th and with the goal -- a trophy.”

5 – West Chicago Wheaton Academy

Coach – Chris Felinski, Jim Spivey

2013 Finish – 10th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Brandon Lach SR (46,15:45), Jacob Robleski JR (63,15:53), Jonah Jones SO (99,16:06), Mitchell Smith JR (111,16:14), Jimmy Ridge SO (170,16:45), Chris Jones SR (199,17:20), Jonah Ladesic JR, Soren Johnson SR, Jacob Karnerr SO, Nate Consoli SO, Alec Heidlauf SR, Jonah King SO.

Newcomers – Jeffrey Ridge FR, Ryan Lotz FR

Outlook – This team snuck up on people at the Richard Spring Invitational when they moved into the top 10 in 2A. They held that momentum as they finished 10th at Detweiller last November. With basically all of their runners back from that team, it is hard to dismiss this squad coached by Chris Felinski and Jim Spivey. “Our training went very well,” Felinski said. “I don’t want to see us peak too early, and our goal is to come into the season healthy.”

This team would have been ranked at the top going into the season. One major loss for the team is that Noah Van Dyke, who was one of their top three runners last season, is no longer attending the school. That could make things a little tougher. This team relies on old fashioned pack running. Their split on five runners last season was anywhere from 25 to 30 seconds. Brandon Lach was their first runner at state finishing 46th. He has the talented to get close to the top 25 in November. Jacob Robleski, Jonah Jones, and Mitchell Smith all are capable of being the first runner for this team. When you run as a pack, that strength shows up allowing anyone to be your first. Jimmy Ridge was the sixth runner at the end of the season. He was on the average 45-50 seconds behind the pack last season. He will need to be closer to the pack this season.

It is hard to beat a team with a great split at the state meet. York has showed that so many times. The big thing for this team is finding a front runner that will score low numbers while keeping his teammates close. Wheaton Academy has the talent to that this year. It will be interesting to keep an eye on the development of a fifth runner. If Felinski and Spivey find that man, this team will be tough to beat. “As a team, I would love to see us finish in the top 5, although that may be ambitious since we lost Noah Van Dyke and he will be hard to replace,” Felinski added. “We did have great pack running, I believe it was 29 seconds at the state final last year, and I hope to continue the same.  Everyone will be running faster, but we have to find that runner to replace Noah.”

6 – Grayslake Central

Coach – Jimmy Centella

2013 Finish – 17th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Jack Battagia JR (53,15:49), Max Brunk SR (77,15:58), Suneed Ahmed SR (132,16:27), Danny Vincent JR (145,16:32), Noah Boelens SO, Zach Cinq-Mars JR, Aaron Johnson SR, John Girmscheid JR, Kevin Ocsena SR, Alex Bugno JR, Nick Greenwald JR, Serik Rotman SR, Ben Stembeck SO.

Newcomers – Jack Aho SO, Eli Minsky FR

Outlook – It is nice when a runner falls into your lap like happened to Grayslake Central Coach Jimmy Centella. Last spring, a freshman named Jack Aho came out for track. He did not run cross country last season, instead he played soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. What he did during track shocked many close to the Grayslake Central program is when he beat Will Brewster’s freshman record in the 3200 by seven seconds running 9:37 at his sectional meet. He is out for cross country which has Centella smiling. Four other runners are back from last year’s 17th place finishing team at state. This team could be the surprise in 2A this season.

Aho was brought along slowly this summer by Centella and is running in their top group. “Our summer training has gone very well,” said Centella. “We added a little bit of more intensity to our training this summer and the boys have risen to the occasion.  Our top group was the deepest we have had at our summer camp and we feel like our guys have laid a great foundation for the fall.” Central has a good nucleus back led by last year’s top two runners Jack Battaglia and Max Brenk. Battaglia could be another surprise for this team. He finished 53rd a year ago as a sophomore and could nudge his way into the top 25 in 2014. Suneed Ahmed and Danny Vincent were also in the top five for this team last year and should be battling for those spots again. Freshman Eli Minsky has adapted quickly to high school training and could find himself part of the top 5 along with John Girmscheid.

One thing to watch is in September is how Aho adapts to cross country running. He did pretty well in track in that aspect. The split on Bataglia to Vincent (1-5) at last year’s state meet was 43 seconds. It will need to be close to that this season. It also depends where Aho ends up. He could be in the top 10. “Without a doubt, this is the deepest team that I have been fortunate enough to coach in my 6 years at Grayslake Central,” Centella stated. “If we work hard and stay healthy, we have the ability to make a deep run in the state series.  We should have a great front runner in Aho and another in Brunk.  We should also have a very strong pack.  As long as we work hard each day and push each other to get better, this team can be one of very best in school history.” If everything clicks for the Rams, this team could return from Peoria with a trophy.

7 – Vernon Hills

Coach – Mark Whitney

2013 Finish – 3rd – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Shane Williamson SO (27,15:30), Rob Williams SR (40,15:40), Tyler Smith SR (42,15:42), Trevor Meyers JR, Sam Laneman JR, Caleb Ju JR, Tim Krashevsky SO, Bryan Castellanos JR, Alex Geier JR, Zak Baumann SO.

Outlook – Vernon Hills demonstrated how good they could be during the season placing high in big invitational races. When it came to the post season, they dominated their conference meet, Burlington Central Regional, and Belvidere Sectional winning all three pretty easily. The big shock to some was not that they finished third but they were within two points of second place Illiana Christian. Only three are back from that team. It could be as good as or better than their third place state team this fall.

The secret to the Cougars last year was having the front runner in Kyle Whitney and a strong pack behind him. Whitney along with 2A 1600 champ Ben Moehrdieck have graduated, but their 2-4 runners are back. Shane Williamson had a breakout freshman season just missing all-state honors finishing 27th. He should be a top 15 runner this campaign. Rob Williams and Tyler Smith provide a strong 2-3 duo for Coach Whitney. The key will be finding fourth and fifth men to complement the first three. Whitney may have that with juniors Trevor Moyers and Caleb Ju having strong summers and ready to hop into those spots. Sam Laneman, Bryan Castellanos, Tim Kraveshesky, and Alex Geier could also fight for those spots.

Vernon Hills could have two or three all-state runners. That will not mean a thing if the pack is not close to the three. “Our primary goal is to again send a team to the State Final and improve on last year’s 3rd place finish. Last year, the team saw what can happen when you have strong front running and a tight pack not far behind. We also have a lot more experience now running on the State Final course, so that is a positive,” Whitney said. “With three of the top five from the 2013 State Final returning, we are excited about our chances this year. Based on what I'm seeing at this point, I'm optimistic about being able to do that. Weare not yet a very deep team, so we can't afford any significant injuries.”

8 – New Lenox Lincoln-Way West

Coach – Jason Van Swol

2013 Finish – 9th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Mitch Feehan JR, Kamil Stafinski SR, Billy Stripek SR, Cesar Zavala SR, Peter Motto JR, Joe Wintercorn SR, David Mukler SR, Evan Mitchell SO, Brady Green SO, Louie Grigoletti JR, Patrick Abella SR, Jon Bostajancic SR, Jake Martin SR.

Outlook – This team could be the surprise in Illinois this season. I looked at the numbers twice to confirm it. The top four runners return from last year’s ninth place finishing team at the Normal West Sectional. That performance at that meet was not one of their best. They do have the talent to sneak up on teams this fall.

Mitch Feehan stepped into the #1 spot as the team entered the state series. He should be challenged by Kamil Stafinski for the top spot. Seniors Billy Stripek and Cesar Zavala will battle for the 3-4 spots. There is a group of runners that will be challenging for the 5-7 spots including David Mulder, Petter Motto, Evan Mitchell, and Brady Green. The two to watch could be the sophomores Mitchell and Green who could make their presence known in the top 5 by the time we get to October.

This team will need to find consistency if it wants to battle for a state berth as well as a top ten finish at Peoria. Feehan and Stafinski are capable of placing in the top 35. They will need a 40-45 1-5 spread for this team to do go things at the end of this season.

9 – Glen Ellyn Glenbard South

Coach – Doug Gorski

2013 Finish – 5th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Ibrahim Jawad SR (66,15:54), Jon O’Rourke JR (107,16:11), Michael King JR (139,16:30), Andrew Sundberg JR, Colin Meade SR, Christian Hilliard SO, Kevin Bernschot JR, Andrew Fearn JR, Ethan Sowl SO, Joey Wood SO, Dan Self JR.

Outlook – The Raiders took a big hit with the graduation of 2 time state champion John Wold and 3200 Meter 2A champion Joe Singleton. Those are big shoes to fill. The talent is there for this team to make another run in the state series. Only three of the top seven are back from last year’s fifth place team.

Finding a front runner for this team could be tough. It will be hard at first to replace the tiny points that Wold and Singleton provided. Senior Ibrahim Jawad was the team’s 4th man last year and could step into that spot. You could also watch Jon O’Rourke and Michael King step up as well. Colin Meade, who was the eighth runner a year ago, could be part of the top five. Coach Doug Gorski saw big improvements this summer from sophomores Joey Wood and Christian Hilliard. They could give a boost to this team.

This team should make its fifth straight state meet. It will have to take a different approach with no front runners in big meets on this squad evident. It will take solid pack running to achieve their goals. The potential is there to a have a 5 man 40 second split. The key will be moving the pack up as they get to state series time.

10 – Sterling

Coach – Charlie Bishop

2013 Finish – 11th – 2A Belvidere Sectional

Returnees – Jonathon Landis SO (30,15:31), Cody Lund JR, Nick Olds JR, Zach Alston SR, Ethan Rocha SR, Evan Reiley JR, Brandon Schuldt SO, Cedric Debree JR, Vinny Poi JR.

Outlook – In the tough Kaneland Sectional this season, Sterling could find itself with one of the state qualifying berths. Coach Charlie Bishop has the horses to do that. Six runners are back from last year’s team that finished 11th at their sectional. They will place higher in 2014.

Jon Landis came on strong as the #1 runner as a freshman for Sterling and looks to continue that role in the 2014 season. He will be towards the front in most races. It would not surprise me if he ends up in state in the top 25. The team will have success this season if their 2-5 pack can move a little bit closer to Landis, on the average last season, it was under 1 minute. At the sectional meet, it was a whopping 65 seconds. It needs to stay closer to 40 this season with their star sophomore towards the front. Senior Zach Alston should be their #2 runner. Look for also Cory Lund and Nick Olds to be in that pack as well. The split on 2-5 was tight at sectionals at only eight seconds. It would be great if that was the average for 2014. On the average in 2013, it was closer to 40 seconds.

The gap between Landis and the pack and the split on 2-5 will the key for this team in 2014. The potential is there for the Golden Warriors to make it to Detweiller Park and to finish in the top three in the NIB-12 Conference. We should get an idea of how good this team will be at the beginning of October.

11 – Crystal Lake Central

Coach – Bill Eschman

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Jake Cannizzo SR (96,16:04), Cole Barkocy SO (119,16:19), Andrew Jackson JR, Ryan Bush SR, Weston Sterchi SO, Brandon Tomasello SO, Jose Esquivel SO, Tyler Tomasello SO, Ryan Hillier JR, Ben Swanson SR, Emilio Acevedo SR.

Outlook – The Tigers traditionally run their best races at the end of the season. I would not expect anything differently in 2014. They do have some questions that need to be answered if they want to make their annual trip to Detweiller Park. Bill Eschman has only two runners back from last year’s seventh place state team. They will have to rely on some young runners this season to get them from point A to point B.

The Tigers took a big hit losing four of their top seven to graduation including all-state runner Ryan Pitner. Eschman also lost last year’s #6 runner Michael Penza who decided not to come out for cross country. Jake Cannizzo, who was the fourth runner at state for Central last year, will be one of the leaders on the team and will vie for the front spot. Ryan Bush, also a senior, has also stepped up to help lead this team. The one runner that could step up as the #1 runner in meets is sophomore Cole Barkocy. He had his ups and downs last season being as good as the #2 runner in some meets to #7 at the state meet. With a year of experience, he could be a surprise in 1A. Eschmann’s sophomore class is strong. Expect Wilson Sterchi and Brandon Tomaselo to help in the top five. Junior Andrew Jackson should also be in the mix.

“The summer training went well.  We are in a rebuilding year as we lost our top 4 runners to graduation and our #6 runner did not come out.  This has left the door wide open for the younger guys to see what they can do.  It will be a growing year and we will struggle at times,” said Eschman. “As always I expect each runner to work the best they can and give 100% and to do what they can to help the team be the best it can be.  Our conference division will be tough with Prairie Ridge and Grayslake Central.  They are 2 teams that are improving dramatically.  As always the Kaneland (Old Belvidere) sectional will be tough.  Every year it has 3 or 4 of the top 10 teams in the state and I don't see that changing much.” Early in the season, it will be a matter of finding chemistry of these runners as they get used to running together in races. The Tigers will gel just as we get to the state series and just in time to make a push to Peoria.

12 – Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge

Coach – Judd Shutt

2013 Finish – 21st – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Mitch Kazin SR (57,15:50), Filip Pajak SO (70,15:56), Scott Hearne SR (118,16:19), Tyler Figgins JR (143,16:31), Chris Berg SR (179,16:51), David Tulke SO (200,17:21), Brian Doan SO, Mike Ostrow SO, Jacob Hanacek SO, Lucas O’Hanian JR, Max Borth SO.

Newcomers – James Lasak FR, Brett Stevens SR (played soccer in 2013), Austin Nobbe JR (ran track last spring).

Outlook – The Wolves will be one of the top teams this season in an improved a tougher Fox Valley Conference with McHenry, Grayslake Central, and Crystal Lake Central. This team does have the athletes to make another trip to Peoria and definitely improve on their 21st finish from a year ago. Coach Judd Shutt has six of his top seven back from that team. “Although our overall team numbers are down over the last couple of years, a positive is that nearly all of the team trained with us consistently throughout the summer,” stated Shutt. “Last year's state meet trip has fueled a clearer team goal vision for the upcoming season.”

Shutt has a good 1-2 punch to lead his team this season. Mitch Kazin was their first runner at last year’s state meet for Prairie Ridge finishing 57th. He will be pushed by Sophomore Filip Pajak. He was the #2 runner at state, but had a breakout season in track running 9:39 for the 3200 and 4:27 for the 1600. He has the potential to be close to the first 25 at state. The split on five at the state meet last year was 61 seconds. It would be a plus for this team could lower their gap down to 55 seconds. That would work even better if either Pajak or Kazin were closer to the front. Scott Hearne, Tyler Figgins, and Chris Berg could be in the 3-5 positions. Austin Nobbe, who is out for xc after running track last year could be a surprise in the five as well.

“Right now my greatest expectations for this team is that they come to practice and early season meets ready to battle every day,” added Shutt. “They have the opportunity to be a strong squad, but there destiny will be defined by a large group of guys embracing their role on the team, whether that is to optimistically battle for top 7 every day or simply work on personal PR's.  If we experience consistent effort and strong health this team should be able to hunt down lofty goals during the season.” This team will be tested within the conference, but it will make them battle strong by the time they get to the state series. It is a team that could be near the first five if they continue to progress at the rate that they are at right now.

13 – Chicago Latin School

Coach – Dan Daly

2013 Finish – 10th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Aidan Sarazan SR (48,16:04), Jacob Silverman SR (49,16:04), Simon Ricci JR (71,16:18), Max Bucksbaum SR (88,16:27), Michael Gross SR (135,17:04), Alexis Lopez SR (156,17:20), Miles Baker JR, Charlie French SO, Graham Ferguson SR, Eric Gofen SR.

Outlook – With six runners coming back from last year’s state team that finished 10th in 1A, there could have been the likelihood that these athletes were looking forward to some big things in 2014. In June, instead of being one of the bigger schools in 1A, they were shifted into 2A were they are now one of the smaller schools. The dreams are still big for this team. Expectations are high for the Latin School after the success that they tasted last season.

Latin School should make it out of their sectional easily if they are placed in the Fenton Sectional which looks likely to happen. The good thing about this team last year is they did a great job of exhibiting pack running within their five scoring runners. The split at the state meet was only 32 seconds. Aidan Sarazan and Jacob Silverman traded off on the #1 position most of the year and look to do the same this season. Simon Ricci and Max Bucksbaum give Coach Dan Daly a strong 3-4 duo. The key will be getting Michael Gross closer to the four. Last year he was about one minute behind Sarazan or Silverman most of the year. That needs to come down for this team to place high at the state meet.

“Coming into last year we all thought the boys would be the big story and then the girls had an amazing season.  As the coach of both I think the boys are hungry for that kind of success at the state level,” Daly said. “We broke into the top 10 at 1A which was a first for Latin, our goal this year is to be a top 10 team at 2A. If were able to accomplish that goal, then this team will stamp itself as greatest boys team I’ve had the honor to coach in 25 seasons. We have great depth for a small school, if the boys continue to improve and drop their times the sky is the limit on November 8th.” Some people would look at a jump up in classification for a 1A school tough to handle. It should not be for this team. We will get an idea at First to the Finish in September how this team handles running against some faster runners. I am guessing they should handle it okay. A top 10 finish at state is within its reach.

14 – Springfield

Coach – Dan Devlin

2013 Finish – 9th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Logan Beselke JR (76,15:58), Mike Neposchlan SR (94,16:03), Heath Warren JR (102,16:09), Eric Wise SR (109,16:13), Matt Waldinger JR, JD Kropid JR, Josh Moore JR, Peyton Fine SO, Jacob Woodard JR, Recco Kolke SO, Jack Moore JR, Jarrett Gary SO.

Outlook – The Senators came on strong at the end of the year to finish ninth in the state meet. Expectations are a little higher as four runners are back with state meet experience for Coach Dan Devlin.

The one runner that I would guess to step into the #1 spot on the team is Heath Warren. He had a great sophomore season in track helping his team finish 4th in the 3200 relay last spring along with running 1:56.21 for the open 800. His stock has jumped during the summer. At a summer meet in the Springfield area, Warren ran 4:24 for a full mile. This was after running a strong 8 mile workout in the morning. Even though he finished 102nd last fall, he could push Springfield to new levels of success. Logan Beselke, Mike Neposchlan, and Eric Wise along with Warren give this team a strong first four runners.

The key will be finding a fifth runner. Matt Waldinger and JD Kropid ran in the regional meet for the Senators and could step into the fifth spot. Sophomore Peyton Fine or Josh Moore could step in as well. This team will show how good it is in the beginning of October once they find a fifth runner. The split on four could be tight, but they will need a 55 second 1-5 split for this team to improve on last season’s state finish.

15 – Chatham-Glenwood

Coach – Mike Garber

2013 Finish – 12th – 2A State Meet

Returnees - Landon Skelly JR (39,15:40), Chris Durr SO (105,16:10), Jonathon Durr SR (169,16:44), Jack Carndoff SO, Paul Giganti JR, Justin Hollinshead SR, Michael Rogers JR, Jacob Siebert SR, Jarrett Marvel JR, Sam Rapp JR, Sean McRae SR, Gabe Powell SR

Newcomers – Jacob Thornton JR, Logan Capps FR

Outlook – The Titans will look to get back to Peoria for another state meet berth. The team will be hurt a little bit with the loss of #4 runner in last year’s state meet Grant Luebkeman. His running career has been plagued by injuries the latest one that ended his track season. “He finished track season early due to injury and has not been able to make a recovery for Cross Country,” added Glenwood’s Coach Mike Garber. “We are sad to lose him.” There are still three runners back from last year’s top seven along with a deep squad that can have another great season.

“The Glenwood boys have worked very hard this summer,” Garber said. “They meet together to run in the morning, they play Frisbee in the afternoon and hang out together at night. It is great to have a group was not just friendly, but competitive with each other.” One runner that is on the verge of some great things this fall is Landon Skelly. He was CG’s #1 runner last fall and should do so again this year. It would not surprise me if he ends up in the top 25. Brothers Jonathan and Chris Durr should battle for the second position. Gabe Powell, who was in the top seven as a sophomore, had knee surgery and missed the 2013 season. He is 100% healthy and had a great summer. He should also contribute to their top five. Jack Carnduff could also contribute. Also watch for incoming freshman Logan Capps to push his way in the top five this season.

“The boys have their sights on a Top 5 finish this season. Last year we battled injury and sickness the last few weeks of the season and still placed 12th. It is a steady improvement over the 20th place finish the prior season. We have the talent and the work ethic to achieve our goals,” concluded Garber. “These gentlemen are ready to do whatever it takes.” This team had a little bit of a roller-coaster ride at the end of last year barely making it out of their sectional after finishing second in their conference. That year of experience should help that consistency. The potential is there to have a 1-5 pack of 52 seconds or better. If that happens, the Titans could challenge for a top five finish.

16 – Lake Forest

Coach – Nathan Sweet

2013 Finish – 9th – 2A Belvidere Sectional

Returnees – Mark Myers JR (24,15:23), Matthew Mekaelian SR, Etienne Najman SO, Zach Streigntiff SR, Sam Grum SR, Richard Faller JR, Alex Guest JR, Jack Corrigan JR, Grant Levin JR, Max Spehlman SR, Gavin Hoch JR, Blake Hinch SO.

Outlook – The Scouts suffered through some injuries that slowed down their progress entering last season. Even with that, they finished ninth in their sectional. Coach Nathan Sweet lost his 2-3 runners to graduation, but do have a good crew back heading into this year. “I feel that our training for the top 3 guys went very well,” said Sweet. “The heart of the varsity will be a work in progress as we get to the end of the season.  But the most important part of this summer is that we are coming into the start of the cross country campaign injury free which we did not do last year.”

Mark Myers did surprise some early last season with his improvement curve. It showed at the end of the year when he placed 24th at the state meet. Lake Forest runs in 3A during track. Even with that move up, Myers still qualified for the 3A state meet running 9:24.26. The one runner that made the biggest improvement is senior Matthew Mekaelian. He improved his PR in the 1600 down to 4:21.71 and also qualified for the state meet. With these two runners back, it would not surprise me if both were in the mix for all-state recognition. Their 3-5 pack will need to be solid. Etienne Najman, Zach Streightiff, and Sam Grum ran within ten seconds of each other at times last year including at the sectional meet. They will need that kind of consistent split to help this team.

“Our expectations for this year are to improve in our post season results over last year at our Conference, Regional and Sectional meets,” Sweet said. “Being 2A we need to close the gap with Vernon Hills, who I expect to be really strong again this year.” They will need to have a tight 3-5 split and have that pack closer to Myers/Mekaelian this season. In a sectional as tough as Kaneland will be this season, those things will be necessary for this team to make a trip to Detweiller in November.

17 – Burlington Central

Coach – Vince Neil

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A Belvidere Sectional

Returnees – Clay Musial SR (26,15:29), Kyle Neubauer SR, Nick Harvey JR, Wes Metcalfe JR, Eric Johnson JR, Andrew Barvetta SR, Zach Lorenz JR, Tate Henrikson SO, Dan Wagner SO, Everett Weberg SO.

Newcomers – Jack Zettl

Outlook – It has been close but no cigar for the Rockets the past few years when they get to the sectional meet. Last season, they finished seventh failing to make it Detweiller Park. That bad luck could change this season. Four of the top seven from last year’s sectional team are back giving hope for Coach Vince Neil and the rest of his Burlington Central team.

Clay Musial missed by one spot getting into the top 25 last season. He bounced back during the track season lowering his PR in the 3200 down to 9:40.93 and qualifying for the state track meet. It would not surprise me if he ended up in the first 15 at state this season. Their 5 man split was the problem most of last year as it was over one minute. Their best split was 55 seconds at the sectional meet. If they can drop their split down to 45 seconds with Musial in the front, good things could happen. Kyle Neubauer and Nick Harvey should lead that pack with assistance from Wes Metcalfe, Eric Johnson, and possibly freshman Jack Zettl.

“We are planning for this team to be a state qualifying team,” Neil said. “We have had many close finishes in the past few years and the boys are ready to make the jump to the next level.” The key will be finding and keeping a solid pack behind Musial. If they can get a strong five together, they could get over that bump in the road that has been slowing them down to get to Peoria.

18 – Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin

Coach – Joshua Bluhm

2013 Finish – 8th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Ethan Bluhm SR, Nate Furstes JR, Justin Zanger SR, Tim Oh SR, Tucker Schmidt JR, Devin McReynolds JR, Michael Oh SO, Zach Lloyd JR, Matt Eherding SO, Albert Perlman SR.

Outlook – Just like Burlington Central that we mentioned above, Sacred Hear-Griffin always seems to find that bump in the road that prevents them from getting to state. It happened last season when they finished eighth at Decatur. Three are back from that sectional team with ambitions of extending their week past sectionals this season.

The three that are returning are the core and should be leading this squad both on and off the course. Ethan Bluhm and Nate Fierstos ran close together most of last year and should battle for the #1 spot. Justin Zanger should be close behind. This team thrives off of tight pack running. They slipped a little at sectionals when they had a 49 second 5 man split. Their conference split was close to 30 seconds. Tim Oh, Tucker Schmidt, and Devin McReynolds should give this team a strong pack behind those three. Just like last year, the pack will be the key to this team. A close split at their sectional this year could mean a state meet berth.

19 – Belvidere North

Coach – Troy Yunk

2013 Finish – 8th – 2A Belvidere Sectional

Returnees – Eryk Yunk JR (13,15:12), Kyle Graff SR, Max Vittore JR, Alec Beutel JR, Will Palmer JR, Jake Martocci SO, Jared Ellingson SO, Brandon Schultz JR, Anthony Oldani SR, Kevin Ahlenius SR, Nick Noel JR, Javier Gomez JR.

Newcomers – Alec Scott FR

Outlook – It was a novelty last year when going down the starting line before the 2A Boys race, you did not see the tradition of Belvidere North ready to go as a tea. Graduation had taken its toll. With a year of rebuilding and experience for the young athletes in the program, the Blue Thunder has looked to reload for the 2014 campaign. Five runners are back from that sectional squad that finished eighth.

Eryk Yunk will be back as the #1 runner on this team. As a sophomore, he finished 13th in last year’s state meet. He gave up basketball and now his focus is just on running. He could place in the top five this season. Kyle Graff has improved and should be a strong #2 runner. A group of juniors led by Alec Beutel, Max Vittore, and Will Palmer) should step up into one of the top five spots.

“Our guys have had a good summer of running and we are looking forward to those early races,” said Coach Troy Yunk. “We were disappointed in not qualifying for State last year, but other teams in our Sectional stepped up when it counted and we ran a very flat and uninspired race. We hope to be in the conversation this year as a qualifying team for the State meet in November.” Forget about the 1-5 split. The thing to watch is how close the 2-5 runners can stay together. The potential is there to have the four between 25-30 seconds of each other. If they can stay within 50 seconds of Eryk, then we may see the familiar colors of Belvidere North on the starting line at Detweiller Park in November.

20 – Normal Community West

Coach – Steve Destri

2013 Finish – 6th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Matt DeGroot JR, Alex Hillgress JR, Nick O’Neil JR, Glenn Kinley SO, Clinton Bloyd SO, Shea Grehon SO, William Wetzel SO, Caleb Fogler SR, Seth Varela JR, Jacob Poor SO, JJ Billington SO.

Newcomers – Tyler Dunn FR, Colin McQueen FR

Outlook – Five of the top seven runners that stepped to the line for Normal West at their own sectional were either freshmen or sophomores. Some coaches will use that as an experience meet. For Coach Steve Destri, it gave him an indication what could be in store the next couple of seasons. The Wildcats finished sixth at that race missing making the trip to Detweiller Park by only seven points. Those five are back ready to take another step forward.

Alex Hillgress and Matt DeGroot again should be the front men on this team. You will see success from this team when they run close together in races. At the sectional meet, they were within three seconds of each other. Nick O’Neil will also challenge for a top five spot. The one runner to watch this season is freshman Tyler Dunn. He ran 4:41 for 1600 in eighth grade. He finished third in the 800 & 1600 in the IESA state meet. We will see how he transitions to the three mile distance this season. The potential is there. Glenn Kinley, Colin McQueen, and Jonah Gerber will also challenge for top five spots.

This will be a sneaky good team by the time we get to the state series. Hilligress and DeGroot have the talent to place in the top 35 at the state meet. The question will be if their split on five can stay near 60 seconds. This will be a good team this year with a chance to make the trip down I-74 west. If will definitely be a team to watch in 2015.

21 – East Peoria

Coach – Brandon Shaver

2013 Finish – 23rd – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Matthew Church SR (22,15:22), Michael Church SO (125,16:23), Cody Giebelhausen SR (148,16:33), Jimmy Kaufman SR (173,16:46), Patrick Schwinn SR (221,20:28), Alex Binegar SO, Gavin O’Donohue SO, Izaak Maxfield SR.

Newcomers – Jacob Roberts SR, Mark Skaggs FR

Outlook – It was a surprise to some to see East Peoria advance to the state meet last fall. It will not shock anyone if they make the trip back to Detweiller this November. Brandon Shaver welcomes back five of his first six from last year’s state qualifying team.

Matthew Church has the potential to place in the top five this fall according to Shaver. The eighth place finish in the 2A 1600 has given him more confidence heading into this season. The rest of the team followed Church’s lead this summer. “Our training went very well this summer. We have a great group of kids who want to be here training and competing. They hold each other accountable and push each other to improve. They want to see their teammates succeed and they want to drop time. Each runner has been able to increase their mileage and core strength this summer and build the necessary base for a successful season,” said Shaver. “The team has never qualified for state in back-to-back years and these boys know they have a special opportunity to earn that right this year, and know that starts in the summer. Church’s brother Michael, Cody Giebelhausen, and Jimmy Kaufman are the other runners that are back for East Peoria. The fifth man should come from either Alex Binegar, Jacob Roberts, or incoming freshman Mark Skaggs.

Church will be challenging other team’s big guns. It will come down to a pack that will help East Peoria get back to the state meet. It was the first time in 21 years that they ran as a team. They would like to make it two in a row. For that to happen, the pack needs to stay within 45 seconds of Matthew Church and within 25 seconds of each other. “I expect to see a slew of P.R.’s this season. As a team, we hope to return to state, a back-to-back feat that has never been accomplished in East Peoria Boys’ XC history,” added Shaver. “We believe that if we stay healthy and stay focused we can be a state qualifying team, and possible finish in the top 15 overall. This is not something we believe is given and we know how difficult this will be and know we will need a bit of luck keeping everyone healthy. Just like last year, advancing to state and placing well will require everyone putting together their best times at the same meet, and at the right time of the year. We hope to improve our conference finish and place in the top two at the conference meet, hopefully competing for a victory.”

22 - Darien Hinsdale South

Coach – Jim Dickerson

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A Wheaton Academy Sectional

Returnees – Vicente Perez SR, Charlie Nodus JR, Joe Eilbert SR, Roman Drabchuk JR, Alex Beronio JR, Matt Daniel SR, Porleark Toy JR, Sean Cusick JR, Brian Jordan JR, Adrian Mo JR, Nathan deGuzman SR, Chance McKee SO, Chris Joseph SO.

Newcomers – Tristain Ramirez JR (transfer from Glenbard West)

Outlook – A strong finish at the end of last season when Hinsdale South finished seventh in their sectional meet gave Coach Jim Dickerson and his team some quiet confidence heading into this campaign this fall. There have been a couple of hiccups. The IHSA originally moved Hinsdale South back to 3A. It was straightened out after a few numbers were added incorrectly moving the Hornets back. Four runners are back from that team looking for some extra running in November.

Vicente Perez, who was the #1 runner for this team at the sectional meet, was diagnosed with a severe case of Osgood-Slaughter in his knees this past winter. His training has been limited according to Dickerson. It would be a big bonus for the team if he can step into the first three. The runner that may step into the top spot is Charlie Nodus. He had a breakout sophomore year in track when he ran 4:32.9 for 1600 and 9:54 for the 3200. He could dip under 15 minutes this fall. Joe Eilbert and Roman Drahchuk are expected to be part of the top five. Alex Berono could step into the spot as well as Tristain Ramirez who transferred from Glenbard West. Ramirez was the fourth runner on the Hilltoppers talented sophomore team and could give his new school a boost.

The health of Perez is a concern but the depth on this team could help in a big way. The emergence of Nodus will help in the front as well as the mentality that this team can run with some of the better teams in their area. One step at a time. “I am trying to get the team to own their goals a little more, but it is tough since nobody has experience being on a competitive cross country team,” added Dickerson. “We finished strong late in the year last year and that gave them confidence that we can qualify for state and challenge Morton and DGS at the top of our conference. I think we realistically have the talent to be in the top 10-15 at state.”

23 – Champaign Centennial

Coach – Greg Walters

2013 Finish – 12th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Alec Shedelbower SR, Reese Richardson JR, Sam Blisset SR, Alex Miller SO, Evan Pierce JR, Carter Ware SO, David Lee JR, Riley Shube SR, Carl Guo SO, Matthew Broga SO.

Outlook – Even though this team only finished 12th at last year’s sectional meet, Coach Greg Walters could surprise teams this season in his conference as well as the sectional that they will be placed in. He has six runners back from that sectional team.

This is a fairly young team with only three seniors among the first ten. Alec Shedelbower was consistently the #1 runner and should be at the front again. There was a 25-30 second gap between him and #2 runner Reese Richardson. That should come down this season. Sam Blisset, Alex Miller, and Evan Pierce were part of the top five and should be in the mix of that group again. Carter Ware and David Lee are the two likely runners to challenge for those spots. At the end of last season, the 1-5 splits of the Chargers were between 45-53 seconds. That needs to stay the same. With the improvement of Shedelbower and Richardson, this team has the potential to challenge for a state meet berth this fall.

24 – Peoria Notre Dame

Coach – Dan Gray

2013 Finish – 8th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Patrick Bruch SO, Brady Dickerson JR, Victor Fortin JR, Mitchell Mooshord SO, Max Ehrhart SO, Sam Cassidy SR, Noah Lees SO, Jade Baillies SO, Thomas Kortz SO, Mike Kelly SR.

Outlook – There are plenty of things that are new for the Notre Dame cross country boys program. They will run in the Big 12 conference this season after the Mid-State Six disbanded. Assistant Coach Dan Gray steps in as coach replacing retired Mike Sullivan. Four runners are back for Gary from last year’s eighth place sectional team.

This is a young squad that will surprise people later in the season. There could be some growing pains early on. All four returnees are underclassmen but do have that big meet experience. Patrick Bruch and Brady Dickerson look to be the leaders of this team. Victor Fortin and Mitchell Mooshord also return from last year’s top seven. Max Ehrhart and Sam Cassidy will lead a group of runners challenging for the #5 to #7 spots. This will be a team that will have to rely on pack running.

“We have a good 1-4…not yet great, but good,” Gray said. “We are going to have to prove ourselves in a new conference (Big 12). We may take some lumps early, but I see a lot of character in the runners that we have that could pay off in another year.”

25 – Dunlap

Coach – Chris Friedman

2013 Finish – 11th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Phillip Copeland SR (128,16:26), Drew Fick SO (136,16:28), Thomas Skeels SR (153,16:34), Carson Potts SO (180,16:51), Dotun Taiwo SO (191,17:04), Mark Anderson SR, Aaron Fordyce SR, Clark Tow JR, Matt Monge JR, Tyson Burch SR, John Banister JR, Andrew Tomsovic JR, Logan Kirby SR, Vince Florendo JR.

Newcomers – Justin Vozzo SR, Justin Monge FR, Gabby DaCosta FR

Outlook – Dunlap and Coach relished used the underdog role to their advantage a year ago finishing third in the Normal West Sectional then 11th at the state meet. They will miss their top two runners who have graduated but the remaining five of that top seven are back. In 2014, they will not sneak up on anyone.

Phillip Copeland came back strong in track running 9:37 in the 3200. At times last fall, he was either the first man or as low as the third man as he was at the state meet. The talent is there to be in the top thirty this season. His senior year he will be able to find more consistency. Drew Fick and Thomas Skeels form a good duo behind Copeland. Sophomores Caerson Potts and Dotun Taiwo as well as Mark Anderson will challenge for a top five spot. Their five runner split off of graduated John Eberle and Anthony Holhauser was 56 seconds. This group could have a split as low as 40 seconds this season.

The key for this team is Copeland to be up front with that pack behind him. We will find out by the end of September how good this team is. “The boys have had a good summer of training. We return five of our top seven from last year, three of those being freshmen last year. Last year, this team felt as though they played the underdog role all season and frankly they thrived off that. This season feels much the same way,” said Coach Chris Friedman. “Our first goal is to win the conference. Metamora will be our strongest rival. East Peoria and Limestone have improved, but I believe we are ahead of them. Defending the regional title is goal number two. Finally, a return trip to the state meet is the ultimate goal. This group can do it and might surprise some people down the stretch.”

Other Teams to Watch

(In Alphabetical Order)

Bartonville Limestone

Coach – Scott Durham

2013 Finish – 10th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Thomas Thornton SR (72,15:56), Matt Carr JR, Brody Williams SR, Tyler Hiserote JR, Parker Herz JR, Justin Reavely SR, John Thomson SR, David Young SR, Drake Hamm SO, Bowen Snow JR.

Outlook – If we were ranking the next teams after 25, this would be #26. All seven runners are back from last year’s squad that placed tenth in their sectional. Thomas Thornton has been plagued by minor injuries last year. He is healthy and looks to better his 72nd place finish from a year ago. Matt Car, who ran 4:28 last spring, is improved and could challenge Thornton. Brady Williams leads the 3-5 pack. With Thornton and Carr with chances of breaking into the top 25 this season at state, a gap of 40 seconds between the front runners and their pack. The pack has a potential of a 20 second split. If these things can be achieved, a state meet berth may be in order for this team.

Bensenville Fenton

Coach – John Kurtz

2013 Finish – 16th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Jose Perez-Vasquez SO (121,16:20), Axel Nava SR (151,16:34), Joseph Rivas SR (158,16:37), Leonel Rodriguez SR, Felipe Ruiz JR, Samuel Hernandez JR, William Oserio JR, Nathan Irby SO, Antonio Aguilera JR, Anye White SO, Jamie Rosas SO, Dallon Brown SR, Yannis Rigas SO.

Outlook – Only three runners are back from last season’s team that finished sixteenth in the state meet. In most cases, it would be a rebuilding season for some teams. Since Fenton will be hosting their own sectional and I ranked probably the weakest out of the five in 2A, the chances are good that the Bison will make another trip to Peoria.

The potential is there to have a 5 man split of 60 seconds this season. Jose Perez-Vasquez should be the #1 runner. Axel Nava and Joseph Rivas form a solid #2 and #3. Leonel Rodriguez and Felipe Ruiz could step into the next two spots.

Carbondale

Coach – Greg Storm

2013 Finish – 13th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Outlook – Micah Cherry JR, Joyner Deamer SR, Josh Loyd JR, Alantis Green SO, Fred Beck JR, Kyle Bathgate SR, John Lindt SR.

Newcomers – Kylan Rottinghaus FR

Outlook – This team would have been ranked in the top 25. But two of last year’s top seven Austin Baker and Denzel McCauley did not come out for the team. Five are back from that squad led by Micah Cherry. The junior was injured towards the end of last season and just missed qualifying individually by one spot. He will be much improved this fall and could be one of the top runners in the south. Atlantis Green had a great summer of training and could jump into the #2 spot. He was their fifth man most of last season. Coach Greg Storm also thinks that incoming freshman Kylan Rottinghaus could be a runner that will help out immediately and push Green for the second spot. “Our expectations are still the same,” said Storm. We would like to get the conference championship back as well as get to the sectional meet and place in the Top 10. Our depth is a factor, but if we can get the back end of our lineup to develop we will be much stronger than last year.”

Champaign Central

Coach – Argie Johnson

2013 Finish – 6th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Ashton Hyatt JR, Henry Sills JR, Isaac Kasten SR, Payton Woods JR, Hayden Dodds SR, Hayden Garrison JR, Kenneth Sanchez SR, Zack McAdam JR, Jonathan Ben SR.

Newcomers – Noah Brunson FR

Outlook – The Maroons just missed qualifying for the state meet last year finishing sixth at their sectional meet. Four are back from that top seven. Ashton Hyatt appears to be the first man for this team. The majority of the year last season he was the #2 man. The one runner that could step up is incoming freshman Noah Brunson. In last year’s IESA State XC meet, he finished seventh. He has the talent to be the front runner on this team. Henru Sills and Isaac Kasten will challenge for top five spots. This team ran close to a sixty second split in the majority of the meets last fall. If a front runner does not emerge, that gap needs to decrease by 20 seconds for this team to advance to Detweiller Park.

Charleston

Coach – Derrick Landrus

2013 Finish – 10th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Ross Osterday JR, Colton Bell JR, Joe McKirahan JR, Val Walker SR, Drew Mejdrich SO, Kendal Oliver SR, Gavin Corn SO, Evan Freeman SR, Andrew Tresslar SO, Jonah Moore SR, Clayton Redden SO.

Outlook – Five runners are back from last season’s 10th place sectional team. The team has the potential to have a 35 second split or better on their first five this season. This team will have to rely on that pack mentality this year. Ross Osterday, Colton Bell, and Joe McKirhan should challenge for the #1 spot.

Chicago Payton Prep

Coach – Thaddeus Rego

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A Chicago University Sectional

Returnees – Sam Lasota SR (175,16:48), Wesley Chan SR (192,17:05), Sam Detmer JR, Jonathan Annicks JR, Gabe Rojas SR, Ryan Harrington SR, Elliot Adams SR, Tyler Holloway SR, Isaac Schwartz SR, Julian Gomez JR.

Outlook – All of the top seven from last year’s sectional team are back for Coach Thaddeus Rego. The team finished seventh a year ago at the U-High Sectional. If they stay in the same sectional complex this year (Fenton), this could be the third best squad in that area with a good chance to qualify for state. Sam LaSota and Wesley Chan are seniors that qualified for state last year individually. They again should be the front runners for this team.

Danville

Coach – Todd Orvis

2013 Finish – 14th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Caleb Hummer SR, Carl Way JR, Jeremiah Cooley JR, Josh King SR, Tyler Huckelberry SO, Skyler Huckelberry JR, William Powell SO, Zack Cooper SR.

Outlook – Even with the loss of two time 3A 800 meter champion and 2A runner up last fall Johnny Leverenz, Coach Todd Orvis still has a front runner that he can depend on. Caleb Hummer ran 15:13 at FTTF in September, then came down with an Achilles injury that finished his cross country season. He came back slowly in track but ended up earning all-state honors in the 3A 3200 Meter Run. With Hummer fully healthy, the Vikings will have a runner up front. The pack has improved for Coach Todd Orvis. “Our success will be based on how well are 4-7 will develop this year,” said Orvis. They should improve on last season’s 14th place sectional finish.

Deerfield

Coach – Jeremy Kaufmann

2013 Finish – 8th – 3A Libertyville Regional

Returnees – Billy Anderson SR, Alex Wolfe SR, Davey Bickmore JR, Charles Nash SR, Aaron Spak SR, Zach Molina SR, James Sanford SR, Danny Rosen JR, Jacob Daitch JR, Steve Schlax SR, Michael Warren JR, Henry Umlauf SR, Jeremy Latronica SR, Benjy Sachs JR.

Outlook – The Warriors have flip flopped between 2A & 3A the last couple of seasons. For the 2014 campaign, they move down to 2A which will benefit this team. Deerfield did not make it to sectionals last season in 3A. This season they have a shot of top 7 in the tough Kaneland Sectional. This team could have a strong front five led by Billy Anderson and Alex Wolfe. “We took a different approach being more conservative in early summer through June.  The team is just now starting to get to higher levels in late July and August,” said Coach Jeremy Kaufmann. “The expectation is always to train, improve, and set personal records individually and as a Varsity Team. We always train with a State level focus and train for the state meet every day.  That will never change whether we have the talent or not.”

Dixon

Coach – Evan Thorpe

2013 Finish – 8th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Evan Grady SR (81,15:59), Blain Masterson SO (183,16:53), Owen Vanhorn JR, Sean Masterson SO, Chase Fisher SR, Michael Dixon SO, Nathan Nail SO, Ben Davi JR.

Outlook – It should be a rebuilding year for the Dukes as only two of last year’s top seven are back from last year’s state team. Evan Grady (#3 last year) will step up as the #1 man on this team. Blain Masterson, Owen Vanhorn, and Sean Masterson should step in to the next spots.

Elmwood Park

Coach – John Kingsmill

2013 Finish – 24th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Dante Bruno JR (154,16:34), Lucas Kieffer SR (172,16:46), Keit Dine JR (193,17:06), Kyle Gyselinck SR, Zach Hollis JR, Alex Calle SR, Nick Wojcik JR, Matt Walker SR, Xavier Rivera SO, Nick Schmidt JR, Chris Coronado JR.

Outlook – Only three are back from last year’s state qualifying team. Dante Bruno or Lucas Kieffer should challenge for the #1 team. The potential of a 60 second split on five is possible. In the Fenton Sectional in which they will most likely will be placed in, they could make it back to the state meet. Depth could be an issue on this team so staying healthy will be a focal point.

Geneseo

Coach – Don Fredericks

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – David Chenoweth SR, Nathan Soria SO, Charley Elden JR, Gabe Johnson JR, Charlie Schlindwein SO, Luke Johnson SO, Keaton Darin JR, Kyle Sellers SO, Chandler Schwartz SO, Chris Bagley SR, Josiah Crapp SR.

Newcomers – Blake Duncan FR, Cameron Darin FR, Keith Elden FR

Outlook – The Maple Leafs finished seventh at last year’s Normal West Sectional. They have not qualified for the state meet as a team since 1999. They hope that their 15 year drought ends in 2014. Four runners are back from last year’s team led by David Chenoweth. The youngest of this running family, David was the third man last year. He did improve last spring running 4:28 for the 1600. He had a good summer and could challenge for a qualifying spot individually. There will need to be a strong pack behind “Cheno”. Nathan Soria and Charley Elden could lead that pack. “The boys put in a strong summer of base mileage and are hopeful to be toeing the line the 2nd week of November at Detweiller,” said Coach Don Fredericks. “Not a lot of teams will be looking for the Leafs so we hope to fly below the radar and sneak up on teams and catch them by surprise.  We have tweaked our schedule to see more Class 2A State Powerhouses and will be attending the Sycamore and Metamora Invites during the season.”

Maple Park Kaneland

Coach – Chad Clarey

2013 Finish – 22nd – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Andrew Lesak SR (114,16:17), Sean Spaetzel JR (140,16:31), Brandon Park SR (176,16:50), Michael Booton SO, Mitch Reger SR, Ryan Weber JR, Noah Duffey SO, James Walker SR, Will Kuipers JR, Aaron French JR, Andrew Kanitola SO, Anthony Messina SO.

Newcomers – Matthew Richtman FR, Austin Kintz SO, Tanner Robertsen SO, Brandon Cruz, Zach Kurz

Outlook – This team will get bumped and bruised early in the year as 60% of the 2014 Boys Cross Country team in new to the sport. It is a good thing that they do not run the state meet at the beginning of August. Four runners are back from last year’s state team. Andrew Lesak and Brandon Park should be the leaders on this squad. With all of the new pieces being put into place, there will be some growing pains. Running on their home course for sectionals will be a huge bonus. “The seniors of this team have made it a personal mission to bring a high level of leadership, responsibility, and dedication to their new teammates,” said Chad Cleary. “Whereas there are years where a team rebuilds, and others reload, it will be interesting to see how both new runners adjust to the learning curve they are about to experience, as well as to find out how far the veterans who return can help lead us.  With so many juniors on the squad with little or no experience, we are going to take our lumps early. But if things come together at the end, we hope to advance to the Sectional field which will be hosted on our school grounds, and do nothing but make it difficult for those looking to advance.  This is a very fun group of young men to coach. We look forward to a rewarding season.”

Marion

Coach – Eli Baker

2013 Finish – 15th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Mitchell Rushing SR (73,15:57), Zach Young SO, Dustin Reed SR, Jacob Young SR, CJ Wrolson JR, Evan Carr SR, Peyton Robison SO, Zach Essary SO, Billy Mitchell SR, Andrew Parrish SO, Brock Tanozzi SO.

Outlook – All seven runners that ran at last year’s fifteenth place sectional team. Mitchell Rushing qualified for state last season and could be a runner that finishes in the first 40 this season. Marions 1-5 split at the end of the season was close to two minutes. That needs to cut down to at least 70 seconds on five if this team has visions of running at state.

Mascoutah

Coach – Pat Cook

2013 Finish – 20th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Nate Montemayor SO (161,16:39), Daniel Pearson JR (162,16:39), Ethan Price SO (177,16:50), Julian Johnson JR (201,17:22), Josh Brickel SO, Jacob Wilcox SR, Robert Paz JR, Micah Ritt JR, Justin Rogers SR.

Newcomers – Kaleb Dabbs FR

Outlook – Someone send Mascoutah Coach a four leaf clover. Two years ago, he lost 2A 1600 Meter Champion Chris Martin when he moved to New Jersey. After last year’s state track meet, Noah Affolder moved with his family to New York. That is what happens when your school is close to a military instillation. Cook will rebuild from last year’s 20th place state team that has four runners back.  He will have a strong front three with Nate Montemayor, Daniel Pearson, and Ethan Price having great summers and leading the way. Freshman Kaleb Dabbs could contribute immediately.

Morris

Coach – Joe Blumberg

2013 Finish – 16th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Jake Hesslau SR, Zach Chapman SO, Alan Alvarez JR, Tristan DeGrush SR, Vicente Gallegos SR, Jayson Podschweit SO, Austin Patterson SR, Kris Eliakis SR, Austin Stacy SR, Noah Rose SO, Jacob Wantland SR

Outlook – This team should improve from last year’s 16th place sectional finish. Jacob Wantland has missed most of the last two seasons with surgery on each of his hips. He was the #1 runner two years ago and if healthy could return to that spot. Jake Hesslau should be chasing him for the top spot. “We hope to be healthy enough to compete against a Lincoln Way West or Providence for a Regional title,” said Coach Joe Blumberg. “We hope to have three guys in the 15s and four more below 16:30.  We have sort of limped to the sectional meet the last two years, and will be extra cautious during the season to keep our guys healthy.”

Morton

Coach – Joel Zehr

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A Metamora Regional

Returnees – Brady Carius SR (38,15:40), Zach Siscoe JR, Ben Lange SO, Tristan Reigler SR, John Pray SO, Adam Messer JR, Seth Fowler SR, Ryan Kalina SR, Ian Hopkins SR, Nathan Loftus SR.

Outlook – Morton did not make it out of their regional meet last year. This is a young team that could take another step in the state series. Brady Carius finished 38th at state last year and has the potential of a top 25 finish. Four underclassmen could take the next four spots led by Zac Siscoe. Their 2-5 pack needs to be near 30 seconds. The pack needs to be within a minute of Carius. Last year, that gap was between 70 to 90 seconds. “Training went very well.  The Boys team is still young. There is a great group of juniors and sophomores that will continue to make gains throughout the season,” said Coach Joel Zehr. “I would like our team to be able to advance out of the Regional meet which has not been accomplished in the past two season.”

New Lenox Providence

Coach – Dawn Gura

2013 Finish – 11th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Michael Davis SR, Adam Morrison SR, Mike Higgins JR, Mitch Sharkey SR, Mike Grossmayer SR, Jacob Hintz SO, Christian Spesk SR, Colin Martin SO, Brandon Pearce JR.

Outlook – Six are back from last year’s sectional team that finished 11th. They have a close 1-4 pack led by Michael Davis. It needs to stay close to 20 seconds similar to last season. There are four runners that could challenge for the fifth spot. The 1-5 split needs to be close to 40 seconds for this team to improve on last year’s sectional performance.

Normal University

Coach – Lester Hampton

2013 Finish – 14th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Alexander Bruno SR (44,15:43), Eli Hill SR (98,16:06), Andrew Walch SR (152,16:34), Aidan Vaughn JR (174,16:47), Cameron Herbert JR (212,18:13), Grayson Will SO, Jack Franklin SO, Jordan Ho JR, Zack Gacker SO, Kyle Johnson SO, Brendan Wall JR.

Outlook – We normally see the Pioneers towards the top of the rankings. They just missed this season of cracking the top 25. Four are back from last year’s state meet team that finished 14th. Eli Hill and Alexander Bruno had great track seasons and could go under 15 minutes and possibly in the top 15. There could be some new faces in the top seven according to Coach Lester Hampton. Andrew Walch could lead this young pack. “The summer has been more low key then past summers as we’re breaking in a younger more inexperienced team.  Eli Hill and Alexander Bruno are both all-state track performers who should give us the best 1-2 punch we’ve had in a while,” Hampton said. “If we’re going to be a top 5-10 team we’ll need our younger kids to grow quite a bit as the season progresses.”

Rock Island Alleman

Coach – Doug Burke

2013 Finish – 13th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Kienan Otto SR (100,16:07), Augie Darrow SO (147,16:33), Aaron Golding JR (150,16:33), Wesley Graham SR (166,16:42), Connor Darrow SR, Connor Sheley SO, Sidney Boelens SO, Adrian Connolly SO, Ben Woeber SO.

Outlook – With Zach Hird graduated and now running at North Central College, the question will be who will step in as the lead runner for the Pioneers? Four runners are back from last year’s state team. Kiernan Otto should be the top runner on this squad. Their first four should be strong, perhaps within 35 seconds of each other. Their problem could be finding a fifth runner. The gap on paper right now between four and five is close to 80 seconds. That will have to be something that this team needs to work on if it wants to return back to the state meet.

Salem

Coach – Geff Purcell

2013 Finish – 19th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Brenner Webster SR (45,16:03), Caden Owens SO (111,16:45), Blake Quandt SO (138,17:06), Andrew Barnett JR (206,19:46), Parker Lemeke JR.

Newcomers – Isaac Morton SO, Hayden Wimberly FR, Dawson Webster FR, Dawson Linder FR

Outlook – After a year in 1A, Salem bumps back up into 2A for the 2014 season. The experience that was gained in 1A should help this year. Even though they lost their fifth runner Kyle Rogers who did not come out for the team, four come back from last year’s state team. This squad could be in the top ten in their sectional or even challenging for a state berth. Brenner Webster had a breakout season in track running 4:25 for 1600 Meters. He again should be Salem’s #1 runner. Caden Owens and Blake Quandt will challenge for the #2 and #3 spots. What could be a key for this could come from a strong freshman class. Isaac Morton did not run his freshman year, but was a top runner in 8th grade could give this team a boost as well. “We sure would have liked to have stayed in 1A as the largest school instead of the 6th smallest school in 2A,” said Coach Geff Purcell. “Our boys will be stronger than last year and I feel we have a good opportunity to get back to state even out of the Decatur 2A Sectional.  We will be deeper with talent than last year with stiff inter-team competition to be in the top 7 varsity.”

Taylorville

Coach – Steve Walters

2013 Finish – 7th – 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Returnees – Lawrence Curtin SO, Luke Molen SR, Tommy O’Brien JR, Luke Solan SO, Noah Likes SR, Jake Barker SR.

Newcomers – Austin Bolfing SR (ran track last spring), Will Walton SO

Outlook – Taylorville moves from the Central State 8 to the Apollo Conference this season. The Tornadoes moved in and out of the DyeStat Illinois rankings last season. The talent is there that the same thing could happen. Five runners are back from last year’s sectional team. Lawrence Curtin and Luke Molen will challenge for the top spot. The surprise for this team could be Will Walton. Last spring as a freshman in track, he ran 2:01 for the 800. If he adapts quickly to the longer distances, he could give a boost to this team. They could be in contention for a state spot by mid-October.

Washington

Coach – Tom Smith

2013 Finish – 8th – Metamora Regional

Returnees – Jacob Lee SR, Seth Borrowman SR, Jack Klekamp SR, David Sabolta JR, Harlan Henderson SR, Alex Phelps JR, Carl Boelbling SR, Lance Heffner JR.

Newcomers – Alex Mitchell FR

Outlook – This could be a surprise team in the Central Illinois sectional complex this year even though they failed to make it to sectionals a year ago. Six are back from that team. Jacob Lee and Seth Borrowman both had great summers and will lead this team. The thing that held this team back last year was that there 1-5 split was too big (at conference: 130 seconds, Regionals: 103 seconds). That is something that needs to come down if this team wants to place in the top ten in sectionals or perhaps better.

Waterloo

Coach – Larry Huffman

2013 Finish – 18th – 2A State Meet

Returnees – Lance Mueller SR (29,15:31), Cole Rodenberg SR (41,15:41), Will Zeisset SR (157,16:35), Jake Schwartz SO (163,16:40), Adam Henson JR, Joe Daab SO, Blake Rustleberg JR.

Newcomers – Noah Hays SO (ran track last spring)

Outlook – Waterloo came on strong at the end of last year making it to the starting line at Detweiller Park finishing 18th. Four runners are back from that state team. Lance Mueller finished 29th a year ago and has the potential to break into the first 20 this year. Cole Rodenberg could be close to him when we get to the state series. Right now he is battling a foot injury with hopes of being back by October. They will need a strong group behind the two. That should be led by Will Zeisett. With two strong front runners, if the pack can get to within 40 seconds of the two, this team could see itself back in Peoria in November.

Wheaton St. Francis

Coach – Scott Nelson

2013 Finish – 6th – 2A Wheaton Academy Sectional

Returnees – Nick Brouch SO, Danny Cady SR, Brendon McClure SR, David Kiefer SO, Kevin Donner JR, Parker Sittey SR, Jacob Kolker JR, Liam Kurland JR, Mike Clark SR, Mike Hermann SO, Mark Burkowitz JR.

Outlook – This team came close to making it out of a tough Wheaton Academy Sectional finishing sixth. The task could be a little tougher with only three back from that sectional team. Sophomore Nick Brouch should lead a team that could have their first three within ten seconds of each other. This team will need to depend on the pack. It does not look like they will have a front runner this season. This team will take its lumps early, but we could see how good this team is by sectional time.

Woodstock

Coach – Jay Fuller

2013 Finish – 10th – 2A Belvidere Sectional

Returnees – Luke Beattie JR (21,15:21), Spencer Hanson SO, Donovan Chambers JR, Jarod Baker SO, Spencer Stumpff JR, Wyatt Walkington JR, Dan Shook JR, Dustin Wolff JR, Mike Zaino SR.

Newcomers – Anthony Thomas FR.

Outlook – This is another tough team in the Kaneland Sectional. Four are back from last year’s sectional team that finished tenth. Returning all-state runner Luke Beattie is on the verge of doing great things this season. You can expect him to challenge for the top ten at state. This is a young team with their first eight runners all underclassmen. This team could get close to qualifying this season but 2015 could be their breakout season.
