I ended up my 2012 track season at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Traveling the country was new to me, but traveling across the world was mind blowing. I really enjoyed racing on a more competitive level, and meeting people that I could be friends with for years to come.
I'm really terrible at explaining that experience, but it was the best experience ever. My most memorable moment had to be my fall over the last hurdle. It was my first time “getting out” in a race, and I was slowly coming up on Russell. And then I just blacked out.
It really didn't hit me, and I didn't cry until about 5 minutes after the race when a man walked passed me and asked: “ Aren't you the girl that fell?”
I didn't know what to think. I was just so sad, angry and in shock. Did I really fall?
I tried to remember how, but apparently I had blacked out. (The doctor said I had a slight concussion). I even have a cool scar to remember that day.
Ever since going to Spain, and racing and falling, I’ve had a new love for track & field. It's like that event opened my eyes. I started paying more attention to what colleges I wanted to go to and why i was interested in those schools. I knew that whichever school I went to, I would know SOMEBODY. and
I also started training harder. I swear I am like a little kid when my coach lets me work on hurdles. It gets me all excited about the season, and I no longer want to race, but I NEEEED to race. My coach is doing a great job training me, and every time I make a correction to my technique, I can't wait to try it out in the next block start, or hurdle drill, or race.
When I went to my second indoor meet of the season at my future school, Texas A&M University, I wasn't familiar with an indoor banked track. I had a rocky 200 prelims, but my coach gave me pointers, and it made my final race much easier.
After I had somewhat understood it, I wished I could redo that day all over again. I even got to see a few of my teammates from World Juniors, and people that I had gone on college visits with a few months before. I can't wait to compete with and against some of those same people at that track in the future.
But for now, I'm focused on my next meet at the University of Kentucky. The track is something new, and it's going to be the first time I've run a 400 since AAU nationals in Texas. I'm hoping for the best results
