I’d like to start off my blog by talking about my training since my last High School season.  I went to state for my second time last season and didn’t get the results I wanted.  I’ve trained my butt off so far for this upcoming season.

I never stopped training from last year.  I joined the Dupage County Track Club and started practicing right after the state meet.  We had 3 or 4 practices a week that lasted about 2 and a half hour.  My main focus was on my shot put which I really needed to improve on.  With the help of Coach Nihells and other club coaches like Danny Block, Greg Block, and Alex Thompson (some of the best throwers from Illinois), I was able to improve my PR from 52ft 8in to 55ft 8in.  I learned a lot of good info on how to throw which will help me throughout the rest of my career.  I ended up placing 5th in the shot put and 3rd in the discus at the National Junior Olympic Meet at the end of the summer.  Competing over the summer was a fun experience because of the great weather and extra time to train.  I was also fitting in three full body lifts a week during the summer.

Right after the club season ended I did a lot of training on my own in the ring and in the weight room.  I’ve been throwing every weekday since school has started and have been lifting 4 times a week (2 lower body and 2 upper body days).  I’ve so far gained about 25 pounds since last High School season due to fact that I’ve had extra time to lift and train since I didn’t participate in basketball or football this year.

During the winter I competed in a few meets.  My first one was during December at Illinois State.  I had a personal best throw of 55ft 11in that day.  I knew I could throw much better than that so I kept my training going and went to another meet at Illinois Wesleyan in January.  I threw much better and had several personal best throws.  I had two throws between 56 and 57 feet and had a throw of 58ft 1in.  Right now I’ve been working with my High School coach Cramer at offseason practices and have been attending most of the speed camp with the rest of the track team.  I don’t get to compete again till the end of February and I’m expecting some much bigger throws than before.  I can’t wait for the season to get underway.  I hope to have a couple of state champion medals and maybe even some state records by the end of May!
